Orioles: Baez talks
Danys Baez clearly was disappointed by the news that his attempt to come back from elbow reconstruction to win a place in the Orioles rotation has come to an end. He was told early today that he would compete from now on for a place in the bullpen.
"That's a management decision,'' he said. "There's nothing I can do. I came into spring training and I think I did good. I worked super hard during the offseason to get to this point and there's nothing else I can do."
Still, he insisted that he's happy with his recovery and the fact that he was able to get up to 77 pitches in his last exhibition appearance.
"I'm not frustrated,'' he said. "I'm super happy that I am back on the team and super happy because the first day, to be honest, the first day I thought I might have to start somewhere else because my arm was super sore the next day. But after that, it was great. I never missed one start. That was great for me. I gotta change my mind now. The only thing I've got to work on is pitching back to back. I don't know if I can do that now, but we have to work on it."

Baez may not want to get too comfortable. I find it interesting that they said you aren't a starter and you will compete for a bullpen spot. They didn't say you aren't a starter but will be in the bullpen. I still think they let him go before April 6th.

The Orioles got lucky with Sherrill the early part of last year but then reality showed up and he finished the first half with a 4+ era and continued to fall apart the 2nd half. The only month he had a sub 4 era was May.
He is a decent LH set up pitcher.
Do the Orioles release season ticket numbers?

Pete's reply: I don't think they do.

I'm super glad to hear that he's ok with the O's super decision.

Well, that's just super...

Saw Luke Scott played 1st base in the intrasquad game, so how did he look over there?

Pete's reply: Okay, but hard to evaluate him on a few innings. Don't expect to see him there unless it's a real emergency.

Well if nothing else Baez has put himself in a multi purpose role in the bullpen. Sounds strange for Trembley to say "IF" he makes the team.Sounds like Trem's doghouse has become pac-man.

As to the incredible failure of the Orioles' 37 man Spring pitching try out camp, the old saying that applies is "Everything that can be said has already been said, it's just different people saying it".
I say why not have another shorter three day try out camp, bus in another 37, and let's have some real fun.

What - is he a high school girl....he is super-intraspective!!!!

Giving up over 5 runs every 9 innings is not starter material. If Baez was the manager he also would have told any pitcher with that kind of a record that he wasn't going to be a starter. Let him show that he can throw some hitless/walkless innings as a reliever and then he can talk about being a starter.

Great news Pete! The next step is to release him so what he needs to work on is packing his bags and buying a plane ticket.

hey pete, i know this doesnt have anything to do with baez, but why did they end up sending waters down to the minors? Was his spring that bad?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No, I thought he had a pretty good spring. He has options and those guys go down first. He'll be back soon enough, I'm sure.

Pete,
I think starting is what's best for Danys and the Os. If he makes the team, I think he will be called on to start later in the year. Last year, there were 4 complete games pitched for the Orioles and Philles. Adam Eaton has not pitched a complete game since 2003. Danys Baez has not pitched a complete game since 2002. I'd rather the Orioles keep Danys Baez. Who pitched the complete games for the Orioles last year? Daniel Cabrera pitched two, Guthrie pitched one and Chris Waters pitched the other.

35 pitchers in camp and they can't find 3 starters from the whole bunch...that's pretty sad, especially while your neighbors to the north will have guys at AAA who could be starting for the O's.
But this is what happens when the organization as a whole flails around- incapable, incompetent, clueless and sans plan (probably in that order) for most of the last 10 years or so.
With any luck, the best young pitchers in the org get to learn their lessons and earn some stripes in the minors this year, and not get prematurely dragged to the majors and perform as though they are incapable, incompetent, clueless, and sans plan. There is no need or rush to pile innings and losses on those guys.
Go Os!

That's a management decision,'' he said. "There's nothing I can do." yea there is...HAVE AN ERA UNDER 4.50 AND A WHIP OF UNDER 1.20. Can't stand it when "pros" can't look in the mirror and see what's really there.
Wow the Os starting pitching is gonna suck.

The reason Baez wanted to be a starter is because he wanted 4 days recovery time after pitching. Now he's worried about pitching on back to back days.
What's funny is the O's are using the process of elimination to determine the rotation rather than basing it on performance.

Baez said: "That's a management decision. There's nothing I can do" -- sure there is, DON'T SUCK!!!
Baez said: "I came into spring training and I think I did good" -- I think I see the problem, he thinks a 5.54 ERA is GOOD!!
Hopefully, they're gonna release the washed up dud. Wouldn't that be SUPER!?!?!?!

any idea, historically, what was the worst starting rotation of all time? b/c this orioles "rotation" is going to be incredibly awful.
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That would be hard to quantify.
