News from Fort Myers
Rotation candidate Brad Bergesen did nothing to hurt his chances of starting the season among the top five starting pitchers. He pitched six innings today in a minor league camp game and gave up no runs on three hits while striking out six. Brian Bass also pitched in a Red Sox minor league game and pitched four innings. He gave up a run on three hits and struck out five.
The Orioles were forced to sent Bergesen and Bass across the state because of the split-squad game that was lost to rain on Wednesday.
That update comes compliments of Orioles media relations manager Jeff Lantz.

Pete
Bergesen and Bass may never be mistaken with Spahn and Sain, but it sounds like these guys may just be working their way to a trip north in a few weeks. It's all about differentiating yourself from the mostly nondescript pack.

Sorry Brad, your stats are too good like fellow Bowie teammate Reimold. The team has a reverse roster this year, ones with option issues will take the spots and the ones with talent will have to sit back and wait for failure, which should not take long. Three words for you, Learn to Bunt!

If a player is out of options (Penn) and is traded to another team, does the receiving team have any options to send him down?

Pete's reply: No, the same conditions apply.

The only reason Baez is still with the team is his fat contract, which thankfully will end after this season. Paying him over 6 mill/yr has to go down as one our worst moves and I see some of the 'logic' in sending him out there. The Os' were hoping to salvage something out of him but and/or hoping that some pitching starved team would take him off our hands.
I suspect that neither will happen and the last hing this team needs right now is a washed-up pitcher in out rotation. Did we not learn from the Ortiz/Drabeck/Chen fiascos-not to mention that these guys were actual starters?
My preference would be for the O's to set Baez loose now but the 2nd option would be middle relief. If he doesn't show effectiveness then time to eat his $$$.
