Morning news: Roberts still hurting

Brian Roberts still is feeling soreness in his left side and probably will not return to the lineup in the next two days. He was tentatively scheduled to play today and tomorrow, but is not in today's lineup and has ruled himself out of tomorrow's lineup, too.

He said he is not at the point where he thinks that Opening Day is in danger, but you certainly have to wonder at this point. The soreness is near the oblique area and he says it hurts to the touch. He said he's unsure how he got hurt, but speculated he may have done it picking up a box at home. He's not totally inactive. He did some hitting today and will take live batting practice tomorrow.

"I'll play Monday whether I have played or not if I feel okay,'' he said.

Roster update: It wouldn't surprise anybody if the Orioles announce a few more roster cuts today.

It also wouldn't surprise anybody if the Orioles announce an oblique injury either, unfortunately.

If Robert' side doesn't come around quickly, it may make the Orioles" decision about whether to carry an extra position player or a 13th pitcher a little easier.

Robert's must have learned how to pick up and carry a box from Hayden Penn. I think this is actually the first"oblique" issue this year. Last year I think everybody in the organization including Macphail strained it at one time or another. You probably pulled yours last year too, Shmucker.

How about FanFest? I suppose that's definitely out.

Pete's reply: Fanfest is Saturday at the ballpark.

Sorry, Schmucker, I wasn't clear in my previous post. If Brian Roberts is doubtful about opening day, then he certainly is not likely to be showing up at FanFest. For fans who have been waiting all winter, FanFest is just as important as Opening Day.

Pete's reply: Brian will be at Fanfest.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
