Feeling guilty...or not

Until today, I hadn't missed an intrasquad game in nearly a year, so I'm feeling like I let everyone down by taking a half day off to play golf. Okay, you just caught me in my first lie, but at least I did come back to the training camp to make sure I didn't miss any big news.

If you're keeping score at home, I shot a 95 with one mulligan on a fairly easy course in Pompano Beach. Drove the ball well. Made good contact on the middle irons. No short game whatsoever. If I was that iceberg that sank the Titanic, I would have come up eight inches short and a lot of people would have gone on to have a very nice cruise.

Can't wait for tomorrow, and it's not because I get better-looking every day. The Orioles play two games against the St. Louis Cardinals, one in the afternoon at Fort Lauderdale Stadium and one at 7 p.m. in Jupiter, Fla. Dave Trembley and the major league staff will oversee both games.

Pete: Did you read what Papelbon had to say about Manny?

A real Pap Smear.

I'll have to go along with the guy who wants to know how much for a peck of asparagus (I think it's $4.99 a pound right now if that helps) regards these blog entries about your golf score, interest in metallurgy, fascination with Jimmy Buffet-wear, or how many burritos you can place in your mouth at one time (I'm guessing six), whatever. While I'm sure this is fascinating to the Schmuck family, my attitude is, if you're going to provide us with "off the field" insights, let them be about THE PLAYERS (i.e. like Nick Markakis becoming a Dad as you duly note), rather than about THE BLOGGER. Not that I'm ALL that interested in learning which item on the McDonald's dollar meal is most appealing to Aubrey Huff, but I'd rather learn about Gregg Zaun's fascination with DANCING WITH THE STARS than the six hours the blogger spent stuck in a sandtrap at the local golf course, contemplating his navel. Of course, that's me, perhaps my fellow posters disagree, I invite all to chime in...

Pete's reply: I guess this isn't the point where I do the Sally Field Oscar thing. I guess I better put up some more intrasquad pitching lines, pronto.

HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO GET MY UP TO THE MINUTE DAVID PAULEY INFO WITHOUT YOU AROUND???????????????

At least you can get the city name right. It is Pompano Beach

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: It's called a typo. My bad. I live in Pompano Beach, so I know how it's spelled.

any luck finding rosie the riveter on your day of schmuckster?

95, pretty good if you ask me!

How many days off do you get during the 0's season. Take the whole day and leave the blog alone for one day. We can all survive one or even two days with out a blog entry. (we survive with out much of a pitching staff for 162 games, we can be blog free for two days)

I like knowing a little about the personal lives of Players, it makes them more human and real. They actually have other things on there minds just like us regular joe plumbers.

If you need any other questions for Nick: (ha ha funny or not)

DO they plan do breast feed?

What is there take on the "timeout" vs spanking?

Plastic or Paper?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Thanks, I'll get right on those. "Paper or plastic." Reminds me of that scene in City Slickers when the guy starts needling Daniel Stern, who had knocked up one of the clerks at his grocery store.

Papelbon = "Pap Smear?" I think someone just coined a new nickname, opponent nickname, that is. Haha.

Ah, Pampano Beach, home of the Washington Senators.

Any Dick Nen sightings?

Pete--if that one reader was hacked off that you blogged about the Markakis baby, I wonder what he'll think of reading about your golf adventure.

Pete, maybe you should stick to putt, putt golf. Besides you should really be ashamed of not blogging the intrasquad game. Roch caught a lot of grief for it.

I wish we had Garret Olson back, yes it's that bad.

Well 18 innings of ball tomorrow, that should be fun. With 37 pitchers coming to camp I never thought I would ask this, do the Orioles and Cardinals have enough pitching to handle it? Please let us know if you can, how Trembley will handle it.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm not sure about the Cardinals, but the O's are okay for at least the next few days.

Pete,

I know this is early to talk about the draft but since we have the TMA, (Tillman, Matsu, & Arrieta, not what you're thinking) headed to MiLB. Then you have Hernandez and Bergesen looking pretty sharp. Would you go after another Pitching prospect or a power hitting IF?

Enjoy the blog...

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I believe the O's will take a pitcher with their first pick, though Jeff Z thinks it might be the USC shortstop.

what easy course in Pompano? I need to find an easy course.

Wow, people are a bit testy. Either that, or some Yankee fans accidentally found themselves on the wrong message board.

Pete...anyway you can distribute some of those bright flashy shirts to your readers? It might brighten up a few days for these other "schmucks" ;).

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
