Super Sunday
My mixed feelings about tonight's Super Bowl already are well-known, at least to me. I predicted in The Sun that the Pittsburgh Steelers will defeat the Arizona Cardinals, 27-13, which would allow me to finish the season tied for first place in the Sun staff picks. Ravens writer Ed Lee, who interrupted my wire-to-wire run for the title by taking over the lead with two correct picks (to my none) in the league championship games two weeks ago, was the only Sun guy to take the Cardinals (21-13).
So, if the Cardinals win the game and somebody on the trophy stand says that nobody ever gave them a chance, think of Ed, who will be at home tonight bouncing a new baby on his knee and basking in the glory of his victory over his co-workers. Sadly, because of the tough newspaper economy, there is no prize for first place this year, but Ed will get a nice warm feeling -- if only because he's never been very good with Pampers.
Back to my mixed feelings. Though I'm picking the Steelers, I'm going to be rooting for Kurt Warner and the Cardinals, who are too good a story to pass up. If that means I don't get a share of the paper's prognostication title, so be it. It'll be worth it just to watch Bruce Springsteen sing Born in the USA and Born to Run at halftime, along with a song from his new record, Working on a Dream. That's my other prediction.
Can't wait.

The Orioles never run out of new ways to stick it to their loyal fanbase. They found yet another way. I live in S Florida and watch MASN on DirecTV and I used to enjoy watching "Orioles Classics" ---(re-living the good ol days when the team actually prioritized winning). It tuns out that I can't even watch "Orioles Classics" anymore. Apparently, it costs MASN more money to show programming like that outside of their home region. {I'll wait while everyone recovers from the utter disbelief that the O's are taking the cheap way out on something}
Somehow, I'm sure the irrepressible Schmuckerooni will find a way to justify this one too.
FYI- NESN, YES, and even Fox sports Colorado (among others) show their "classics" outside their markets.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don't know why you'd think that. I've been after MASN about their budget content since it started up. Hadn't heard a word about this, so I'll have to look into it.

I for one could not care less about either team in the Super Bowl, so I'm playing super bowl drinking bingo. Cheers!

I predict that the Cardinals will win 24-17, and here is the order in which people/things/supreme beings will be thanked during the post game celebration:
1. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (spearheaded by Kurt Warner)
2. The offensive line (see #1 above)
3. Mom, for all those long hours in the backyard acting as a blocking sled and tackling dummy while Dad was away doing God knows what, and for feeding me bowl after bowl of Chunky Soup.
4. Dad, for being away all that time doing God knows what.
5. My position coach, for telling me not to carry a loaded weapon into a nightclub.
6. PETA, for telling me that it is definitely not okay to train my dogs to rip each other to pieces while idiotic grown men wager on the outcome.
7. My two dogs. Shotgun and Tampa Two, for being my best friends in the whole world, next to my mom, my 'roid dealer, and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
8. Baltimore Sun columnist Ed Lee for believing in us when nobody else would give us a chance.Good luck with those Pampers, and remember, if you're getting a nice warm feeling, it's already too late.

Cardinals beat the Steelers, 31-27. Larry Fitzgerald hauls in two TD passes. Adrian Wilson (interception) and Chike Okeafor (fumble recovery) make big plays.

I have NO love for Pittsburgh, but I'm a realist. The Cardinals may jump out to an early lead since the Steelers think they've already got it won, but that will simply wake them up and then, the party's over. Final score, Steelers 34-Cardinals 14. And the Ravens would have definitely beat the Cardinals, the league championship game was really the true Super Bowl. Oh, and I hope after the game we can start to mothball football and start talking primarily about the Orioles because spring is about to be sprung, less than 2 weeks til spring training! C'Mon O'S!!!

Not even watching. If AZ wins then I'll watch the DVR version that I'm recording. If Pitt wins I'll avoid it like it never happened just like when they played Seattle.

The Steelers winning the Super Bowl is just another sign that there is something wrong with the universe.
Ugh.
I only watched about five minutes total. I turned it on after finally getting my daughter to go to bed. That was just in time to see the last three plays of the Steelers winning drive.
Some jerk in my neighborhood, in Baltimore, mind you, set off fire crackers just after the game ended.
Ugh.

I never seen Cardinals make that many penalties in a game . I found its interesting that Referees seem blind to Steeler's tricks but loading up on every single Cardinals' mistake .
I cannot wait for Brady's return to Patroits , Titans ,Colts , and Ravens get another crack at that Squealers team .

Hi Peter,
Someone please stand up for Michael Phelps. He's our local hero. He deserves his status. What's wrong with having your picture taken with a bong? Nothing, you can buy them down the street legally. Again, please someone come to this fine young man's defense.
As far as the Superbowl, well it was SUPER and the Boss was FANTASTIC.
