Securities scandal may impact O's top prospects

If you haven't checked it out yet, take a look at the story by Jeff Zrebiec and me about Matt Wieters and Jake Arrieta, who might be impacted by the massive securities investigation that has frozen the assets of New York Yankees stars Johnny Damon and Xavier Nady.

Both Arrieta and Wieters said they are hopeful that their investments are safe, but there are more questions than answers right now.

“It’s really sad that a lot of big league players and minor league players are having to deal with this at the start of spring training,’’ Arrieta said. “It’s going to be a major distraction. I just hope everyone involved is taken care of.”

Pete - I read where Johnny Damon says he can't pay his bills . Funny I have that same problem but it has nothing to do with any securities fraud .

I guess that's what you get for having scott boras as your agent

I wish these guys luck getting their money back but if I was them,,I wouldn't count on it.Pretty amazing how billions just disappear in this country anymore. All these high flying crooks need to find their way to the slammer but we don't take white collar crime seriously enough.

Peter- I hope he doesn't mean "taken care of" as in , like the Mafia, taken care of.
It would suck if 2 of our top prospects got Whacked a la Sunny at the Jersey Turnpike.

Welcome to the real world, everyday you have to wake up and go to work and do your job regardless of bad investments, stocks plummeting, 401K shrinking or finding out your investment portfolio is tied to a fraud. Once you get off the baseball field, you become a regular citizen and it hurts everyone the same, some just more than others.

Peter,
In your lastest article entitled "Roberts and trade",
the part that talks about Mora and playing in the WBC, why didnt you mentioned Mora's comments on how it is better to play in the latin leagues then here in the USA?

I remember reading that in your posting earlier. I imagine it insighted some furious postings to the blog.

I wouldnt give him the time of the day after saying that. Lets hope he gets traded this year...to either Japan or the Latin leagues!

Pete's reply: I think you're taking that entirely wrong, which is my fault. He was talking about the nutty atmosphere at Latin ballparks. He definitely wasn't saying it was better playing there. Quite the contrary.

Pete - Interesting article indeed. It's a shame that some of our top prospects are caught up in all this. Do you kow if MLB or the club brings in outside educators to speak to the players about financial management? Having your agent run your money is a questionable idea, but not every 18 or 22 year old bonus baby can be expected to know that.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
