Reimold rocks, Orioles starting to roll

Yes, I did use a variation of that headline yesterday, and may do it again tomorrow. This is the kind of freedom you get with a blog.

Nolan Reimold just drove in two runs with a soft single, giving him four RBI after only three innings and giving the Orioles a 7-2 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals after three innings.

If you were wondering why Reimold was in the No. 9 hole in the lineup behind Justin Christian and Chad Moeller, well, apparently Dave Trembley is some kind of lineup savant. He must have known something, because Reimold was in the right place at the right time in each of his first two at-bats.

Looks like Reimold wants a shot at the bigs. If he keeps putting up numbers like this, the beloved Luke Scott will be packing his bags in favor of starting pitching and Lou Montanez will be headed back to Norfolk. Seems like we finally have some depth with position players as well as the much documented pitching depth.
Pete, look into your crystal ball, who would you put your money on to be the 4th and 5th starters?

Pete's reply: Penn and Baez.

I am glad to see him getting off to a quick start. I hope it continues throughout the spring and gets him to Baltimore sooner than later someday.

What would be some possible scenarios if by some chance Reimold impresses so much that the FO is compelled to give him a spot out of ST? Scott released/traded/designated for assignment? Pie designated for assignment-waivers? Montanez designated for assignment?

Or is it the case that Scott is definitely making the roster?

What do you say happens, Schmuck?

Pete's reply: Scott definitely makes the roster. Pie would have to be a total bust for Reimold to move into the picture this spring.

Does Reimold have a lot of problems with off speed hitting and plate discipline. I don't really know what his strengths and weaknesses are but last year he tore up spring training too correct?

If it is will he face enough of it in AAA, or would it be worth keeping him to fill in on the roster?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don't see him making the team if there isn't an opening created by an injury or a deal.

Have to laugh at people who, after only one exhibition game, want to put Reimold in the starting lineup for 2009.

Now that's what I call productive anger management! If Nolan Reimold continues to play this mad, he just might make the team. Watch out for Justin Christian; he might be a pleasant surprise this spring.

Reimold is the same age as Pie, pretty much. And the only thing Pie has on him as a left fielder is a bit of MLB playing time.

Reimold's average numbers are about as good as Pie's in the minors, and his power numbers are significantly better.

If it comes down to Pie vs. Reimold in left, I would vote to keep Reimold... because of his power upside being more in line with a left fielder, and the fact that he's a homegrown guy with, I believe, some options remaining.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: If he has options remaining -- and he does -- that would argue for keeping Pie, who doesn't, and taking a long look at him before losing him.

So Pete I know its early but you been there for a week now. Give me you starting day 25 man roster. Then we can compare that to the actual 25 man roster that comes out at the end of spring. GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I will happily do that in the next week or so, but just don't have time right now.

Pete-

"Lineup savant" ?? Let's get Yogi to define that phrase for us. Dumb luck on Trembley's behalf or a well-thought idea coming to fruition?

MLB playing time, plus a lot of speed, is what Pie has over Reimold. Don't get me wrong, I'd be only too happy if Reimold took the Grapefruit League by storm and no park could hold him. But I'm really looking forward to watching Pie, who comes with rave advance notices for his speed and defense, which is a big need.

Pete Dont forget to give a shout out to me for the idea of the blog when you post the 25 man roster prediction, whenever your busy self finds time, lol. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
