Orioles: Some quick hits
Left-hander John Parrish showed up looking a lot different than the last time anybody around here saw him. He's lost a lot of weight -- as much as 30 pounds -- and he looks like he got into a scuffle with Bigfoot on the way to Fort Lauderdale. He has some cuts on his face that apparently were from some kind of vehicle accident, but he's ready to go.
The non-catching position players report later in the week, but a couple already are in camp. Ryan Freel has been working out here for several days, and utilityman Donnie Murphy has reported.
Just about everybody has reported, though we're still waiting to see Jeremy Guthrie, Chris Ray and Brian Matusz.
Koji Uehara on the difference between major league spring training and training camp in Japan: "Everybody (here) seems to be happy. Everybody's laughing. The workouts are very short. Japanese workouts are much longer."

John Parrish, Gregg Zaun, Scott Moore, Chris Gomez and Danys Baez are all like kudzu. The Orioles just can't get rid of these circus freaks.

This is off subject, but I just read the 10 questions for 2009 article, and was a bit miffed to hear, 3yrs 30mil wasn't going to be enough to resign BRob. Are you kidding me? Look at some of deals this free agent season, look at how many quality guys were still looking for homes days before spring training. I think 3/30 is being generous, and if BRob foresees a vibrant economy by Nov/Dec 2009, somebody needs to cut off his kool-aid.

Pete, Koji Uehara has won 112 games in 10 yrs. How do you win (2) Japanese Cy Young awards when you average 12 wins per year ? What is different over there ?

Pete's reply: You've stumped me. I'll have to ask some of the Japanese reporters here.

I'm not surprised Japanese training camps are so rigid, since most of Japan is that way (outside of anime itself and voice actor recordings). American baseball is definitely way more laid back than Japanese baseball is.

Parrish looks like he ready to go..maybe he was wrassling gators to get in shape! His stuff is nasty, it's a matter of location and stamina! I hope he gets a fair shake to be a starter. If you get a chance, ask him what changes he made to become a successful starter last year. Thanks Pete, have fun in the sun and beware of Gulfstream!

Pete-
I believe John Parrish simply lacked confidence in his previous stay here.
If he can stay healthy, he could be a vital piece to this mystery saga otherwise known as the Orioles starting rotation.

IIRC, Uehara was used in relief last season and was hurt the year before. If you take out those two seasons, he averaged about 14 wins a year for 8 years. Sound a little better?

I know he diud both last yr

Pete's reply: I think he's a starter candidate, but is being evaluated for both.
