Orioles: Albers, Ray perfect (updated)

Matt Albers also made his first appearance on the mound since going on the disabled list with a labrum tear last summer, and had much better results than teammate Danys Baez. He needed just 26 pitches to pitch two perfect innings, striking out one.

That's got to be encouraging, since there was some doubt that Albers would be able to come back from the labrum injury without undergoing surgery.

The final member of the injury trifecta that was scheduled today, reliever Chris Ray, pitched a perfect inning that required just nine pitches.

Scoring update: Third baseman Scott Moore just hammered a three-run home run to right that was right into the teeth of a stiff wind. The Orioles now hold a 10-2 lead over the Cardinals in the sixth inning.

I know it is still early, but should we not be able to cut down from 37 pretty easily? In another week or so, assign the guys to Minor leagues that will end up there anyway.

I know we are looking at everybody as a possible sleeper who can help now, but there has to be some who they already know will NOT start with the O's out of Camp. Get them out of here so the others get more chances before they have do decide what to do.

Maybe a little early to start sending pithers away, but if 37 realy cannot get the inning needed, some have to go sooner than later.

Nolan Reimold is a "much" better player than Felix Pie, and he will be the starting left fielder before the season is over. Lets just hope Olson doesn't live up to his billing from the minor leagues or we will have another John Maine trade!!!

"Nolan Reimold is a "much" better player than Felix Pie"

How so? Niether have shown they can hit Major League pitching, and Pie is a better defender. Sounds to ME like Pie is the one with the upside here.

I'm glad Albers and Ray are off to good starts and it's very nice to see Reimold get off to a good start.

Orioles fans remember Baez very well. Baez is a loser in every sense of the word! He should be released and his salary eaten (yeah I know Angelos wants to do that, but hey they did it with Gibbons). The O's having nothing to gain by including Baez on the roster this season.

Pete's reply: Considering that he was pitching with a sore elbow the last time you saw him, I think I'd give him more than one inning before calling him a loser. They've got nothing to lose by taking a good look at him, and $5.5 million to lose for sure if they don't.

Before his season-ending injury last year, Matt "Uncle" Albers did a good job both as a starter and in relief. Here's hoping he stays healthy because I'm confident he'll play a major role on the 25-man roster when the campaign starts. The Orioles are also going to need a healthy AND improved Chris Ray. So far, so good.

In response to kwilmore's comment, Garrett Olson had an excruciating habit of always getting into trouble after two outs, a problem that John Maine doesn't have. Sending Maine to the Mets for Kris Benson reminded me of the suicidal Glenn Davis trade. Frank Robinson pleaded with Roland Hemond to NOT include Curt Schilling in the deal, but unfortunately his words fell on deaf ears.

RE:Baez

Pete-I'm not calling Baez a loser because of the one inning he pitched today. Baez was a loser before he ever complained of having a sore elbow two years ago. The O's got rid of dead weight in Ramon Hernandez and need to get rid of other dead weight such as Baez.

If you want to build a winning team in the model of the old Oriole way, then get rid of the dead weight losers on the roster which is exactly what Baez is.

Pete-

I like Albers because there's something about him that says "I'm not afraid". He will challenge hitters - he's a pitcher, whereas most of the "37 going to heaven" are merely throwers falling inocuously back to terra firma.

Don't know where else to put this story, so here goes: Are You
Smarter than a Second Grader? A boy in my wife's 2nd grade after school reading club was very interested in a book about the life of Babe Ruth. His written answer to a question about the Babe's early years was: "Bladimier Orleans." For four box seats to the 2009 Orioles-Rockies World Series, Game 2, can you reconstruct the question the kid was asked, AND decode his answer? I'll post the answers tomorrow.

Chuck is right in the money....The last time Baez pitched as a starter was SEVEN YEARS ago with a mediocre era and losing record in Cleveland. That is why the tribe put him in the pen. Now, with a rebuilt elbow, he's a starter in the AL East? Does The Sun have an employee drug testing program?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think Baez will be much better in the post-steroid era. And, to answer your question, I just hope the Sun doesn't start testing for cake.

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
