Super Bowl blues (Part Deux)
It isn't often that a reader actually sits down and writes a song for you, so I'm going to be the first to publish these lyrics from a poster who calls himself "the associate." He read my item about missing the Super Bowl Media Day and was struck by a muse. I certainly hope that didn't result in a concussion, but it did result in his version of the Super Bowl Blues:
Woke up this morning, had me them Super Bowl Blues
Said I woke up this mornin', had them Super Bowl Blues
Why oh why Ravens, did you have to lose
Come this Sunday, I'll be watching on my teevees
I guess this Sunday, I'll be watching on my teevees
No friends for company, just a can of aerosol cheese
Sung to the chords of "Statesboro Blues" by the Allmans
Tonight's radio dogma: We're going to take a look at the Maryland men's basketball situation on WBAL's Sportsline tonight at 6 p.m. Baltimore Sun sportswriter Jeff Barker will join me by phone during the first hour and Tony Pente of OriolesHangout.com will jump in at 7 to size up the Orioles player development situation going into spring training. If you're out of the WBAL (1090 AM) signal range, log onto WBAL.com and click on the "Listen Live" icon.

Pete--
Here’s what I would like to see in the Super Bowl pregame show: a review of the two plays the zebras kindly delivered to the Steelers to help them defeat the Seahawks in the February 5, 2006 Super Bowl XL. First, there was the touchdown pass to Darrell Jackson that was wiped away for supposed offensive interference. Then, we were treated to the phantom holding penalty that negated a Seattle completion to the Pittsburgh 1-yard line.
While the film is rolling, let’s listen to Mike Holmgren as he sings “Hanky-Panky Blues.”

I never truly understood just how bad the economy is until today. Steve Davis is canned and Tony Pente is passed off as some sort of Orioles expert. Things are looking bleak. Stay off the tracks. The OH ego trip is making a stop at WBAL. All aboard! C'mon Pete. Pretty please, tell us if you would even want to go on if heaven forbid, anything ever happened to OH.

Pete,
Two weeks til spring training, any word on the O's landing a cheap experienced SP or a quality RH bat? We haven't quit on the FA market yet have we?

Pete's reply: You can check out our story on Looper in the sports section.

C'mon Pete . No one calls them the " Allmans " . That would be the Allman Bros . (as I stand and place my right hand over my heart)

Pete's reply: You'll have to tell that to "the associate." That was part of his post.

Pete-
I think we're all breathless now that your blog has reached out to such etherial horizons as rhythm and blues music intertwined with sports. We never know what lurks in the mind of the Schmucker 'round the next bend. Keep the frivolity coming, because we will be putting on our Os hardhats soon to weather the 12th consecutive losing season. Jack Daniels for all in all the public drinking fountains in Baltimore to help "ease their pain".

Looper fits the profile. A starter with experience as a reliever. He Hendrickson and Uehara can all "maintain" the rotation until the young guys come up. Or if the Liz, Penn, Albers, Waters, Mary Ann, the Professor and the rest do come of age, they can very easily tag out to man the bullpen.
Not a "Fantastic we got Looper!" type of signing. But another methodical small incremental step to give current and future flexibility. My bold prediction is that Jack won't like it, (ok would you believe daring?) but I think it would be another small move in the right direction. 2010,11,12 and beyond. Over 74 wins in 09.
Sorry about the lame 1960s TV show allusions.

Statesboro Blues, excellent choice. Is it sad that I picked that before seeing your note saying so? But honestly, did they really have to let the Steelers go to the big game. Perhaps I'll elaborate on your ground breaking work.
