Super Bowl blues

When I woke up this morning and read some more of the reports from Super Bowl Media Day -- my favorite day on the entire sports calendar -- it just made me want to go back to bed until Monday.

It still rankles me to think that I could have been that guy dressed as a woman trying to interview Kurt Warner. This was the year I was planning to go full lunatic and join Hand Puppet Interview Guy and Pick Man (Nickelodeon is still my favorite cable channel) and, of course, dazzling Latin beauty Ines Sainz from TV Azteca, who's there every year to show what serious sports journalism is all about.

But no, I'm sitting here wearing a T-shirt that says "All my friends went to cover the Super Bowl and all I got was this lousy ice storm." So far, the highlight of my week has been jumping into the icy Chesapeake Bay on Saturday to benefit the Special Olympics, and that actually was last week, but special thanks to those of you who donated about $1,200 in my name just the same.

I'm not expecting any sympathy, of course. I'm sure you wanted the Ravens to win so you could either go to the Super Bowl or -- at the very least -- post thousands of gloating comments on the Steelers message boards. We're all in this together, this being the two days of snow and ice, the collapse of the Maryland men's basketball team and me having to do a couple straight weeks of "Sportsline" on WBAL. Feel free to call in between 6 and 9. It's not like you're going to be out jogging or anything.

Maybe you should have gone back to bed. Two typos in one post (MUST made me...NICKOLODEAN)? We expect better of you. Of course, on radio spelling doesn't count.

Pete's reply: Somebody must have fixed them, because I went back and can't find them.

Pete,

Was it not you a month ago "Sorta" rubbing our faces a bit in it when you were off to that Lost Wages Junket :-)

This is penance. No more Porridge for you!!

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I believe you have me there, though I would choose the Super Bowl over the Winter Meetings any time.

And don't forget the constant attacks that you are no Steve Davis!!

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I promise.

Woke up this morning, had me them Super Bowl Blues
Said I woke up this mornin', had them Super Bowl Blues
Why oh why Ravens, did you have to lose

Come this Sunday, I'll be watching on my teevees
I guess this Sunday, I'll be watching on my teevees
No friends for company, just a can of aerosol cheese

...sung to the chords of "Statesboro Blues" by the Allmans

Pete's reply: One of the greatest blog posts ever.

Know how you feel. In my opinion you are still the most objective sport writter on the Sun staff. Well, there is always baseball until the Ravens draft, rookie camp and then their training camp.

Pete, you're the envy of every middle-aged guy in Maryland: public acclaim, mega-doses of the limelight, cake job and no travel! If that glass isn't half full (we know all about those three-martini lunches), no job is.

Pete's reply: Agreed. My post was tongue-in-cheek. I've always felt very lucky to be in this business, though the 2,000 plane flights when I was a beat writer got a little old.

this time of year is so depressing. please wake me up when pitchers and catchers report.

I've been avoiding ESPN since the Ravens lost to the Steelers, because I don't think I can take seeing "Big Ben's" idiot face on tv for more than ten seconds. I am already bracing for hearing about him for 59 of the 60 minutes during the Super Bowl. If I sound bitter, I am.

Don't give away all of your ideas. With Flacco only a rookie, Ed Reed in his prime, and Ray Lewis showing no signs of slowing down, I have a feeling you'll get your Super Bowl week sooner than later.

To pop fisher: if you were to watch ESPN, they are talking a lot more about the Cardinals and Warner. It's not all about Ben.

I'm with you Joe.
ANYONE BUT PITTSBURGH!
Go Cards!

What do you mean "post thousands of gloating comments on the Steelers message boards". I posted one gloating message in the middle of the Steelers game against San Diego (even kept it clean), and was banned for life. Steeler's message board moderators are a bunch of wimps with no sense of humor.

Cheer up, pal- the O's kick off spring training in 4 weeks! Any updates on Roberts?

Pete's reply: He said on MASN that there has been no substantial progress, but left open the possibility there would be over the next couple of weeks.

Jumping in the Icy Chesapeake Bay is one thing..... but,but using the seaweed and the algee to make a shirt is another......Joe you should be bitter...you have every right to be....because it is sensless for a team with a defeneive front as dominant as the Ravens have to not be in the superbowl......you know why the stealers offense is as good as it is...because they get pushed around by the Ravens defense every year....so when they play other defenses its a breeze compared to going against the Ravens front 7 and Ed Reed............so why wont Ozzie see and accept that if you have something that powerfull and dominant all you need to do is complete it with the corners.....the Ravens defense is good enough to control opposing offense's if it only had great corners to match the other parts of the great defense...you cant have Mansion with an outhouse attached to the back ....why is this so hard for Ozzie newsime to understand....quarterback's rarely come into the league and lead teams to victories.Matt Ryan was an exception to that and that probably wont happen again for 10 years.....but every year a Leodis Mckelvin or a Dominique Rodgers Cromartie complete's a defense like the Cardinals and gives them the support they need to get to a superbowl.....a defense is like a bucket..... it cant have holes...great defenses will always make you hard to beat regardless of who the opponenet is, where or when your playing....so you should be bitter because Ozzie newsome and company absolutely gave pitssburgh 3 victories and a trip to the superbowl at the expense of the Ravens and their fans....this was your year...the Colts [perrenial Raven killers] struggled and went out early.... the Patriots got a setback with Brady....this was absolutely the Ravens year...their chance...next year the defense will be a year older... Ryans' gone and Flacco will still be stareing down receivers and throwing interceptions and over and under throws except for the 20 yard bullets he makes look so pretty....and they wont be sneaking up on anybody .....so yes you should be bitter and your bitterness is only going to get worse.....but hey you got your dreamboat quarterback isnt that whats important...who cares about actually winning.

Rob,

You sir, are an ididot, please stay on the Disney site where you belong.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
