Sad day in Schmuckville
I'm sure all of you share my sadness at the recent death of Alfred Shaheen, who was basically the Henry Ford of the Hawaiian shirt. Shaheen became the first manufacturer to mass produce the blousy and colorful shirts that became a post-war fashion statement and eventually the last sartorial refuge of millions of moon-shaped men like myself.
Here's a story about him from yesterday's Chicago Tribune. Shaheen (left) passed away at 86 on Dec. 22 in Southern California, hopefully still resplendent in a bright silk "Aloha" covered with tropical flowers.
Rest easy Alfred. Nice shirt.

Pete: I understand how you feel. It was the same way I felt when Tarzan died, since that's about as much as I ever wear down here in Florida. The ladies can't get enough of me, I might add.

Peter- I am a Tommy Bahama man myself. Good stuff. I just got their Spring Catalog and am putting away some coin so i can jump on it when it hts Nordstrom next month.
Here is the question, when are the O's gonna do something? I am worried more than ever about the Markakis extension. Why is every contract, either Free Agent or extensions, such a problem for the O's? It doesn't matter who is sitting in the GM seat. Is this an Angelossss thing?
Think back, when is the last player we got to extend with us? When was the last quality Free Agent? Tejada? after 2003? 5 seasons.
Man, is this a pathetic organization or what?
Moose, Ryan, Bedard, Roberts, Palmero, Myers, now Markakis?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Markakis isn't going anywhere. Those other guys were mostly free agents. He's under contract here for three more years.

I, too, am saddened by the loss of this American Icon. Nothing like a good ol' polyester, um, silk Hawaiian Shirt to take the blues away.
Apart from the fashion statement and the cover-up of failed New Year's Resolutions, you can always trust a man who is comfortable in his own skin, um, floral delight! Thanks for giving us ALL the news, Peter. Good and Sad!

Yet another slow sports news day, eh
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, since the thing was posted at 6 am, I would have had to write about Manchester United to get some Tuesday news into the blog at that time.

Pete,
How about this; Out of respect for Alfred Shaheen and yourself, the Orioles can have a promotion one night. Everyone coming to the Orioles game wearing a flowered silk shirt gets a lay. I would come! Play Don Ho in between innings. I bet the fans would be lined up. Everyone should have at least one nice flowered hawaiian shirt and one good lay.

Pete's reply: Coach, you know that's spelled "lei." Now, behave yourself.

Doesn't Pete bear a striking resemblance to Alfred? What say you Pete?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I hope not, considering his present state.

Pete,
Good info. It's nice to remember Ellery Chun of Hawaii. He basically invented the shirt and saved his family business in the process. He passed away several years ago at 90 (approximately). It just goes to show that Aloha shirts add to human longevity,

An even sadder day will occur April 6 .

Tommy Bahama? For the price of a couple of those at Nordstrom you could come down here to Honolulu (seriously, I think tickets from BWI to here are at an all time low, my parents said under $500 round trip) and find better shirts, vintage shirts (I AM talking polyester here) at Goodwill and Savers for about $5 to $10. Sure you have to look through a bunch that won't look good on anyone ever, but I usually find a gem at least once per trip.
Now if only the O's could have such luck in international scouting. Pete, do any teams look in India? You'd think that with their great cricket tradition (I know it's a completely different motion that involves a running start) they'd have some pretty good hurlers hidden somewhere.

Maybe not as sad as the passing of a great human being . . . but how about the Yankees officially crushing our souls today? Perhaps a half hearted move towards Adam Dunn will bring my spirits up.

Pete,
Say it ain't so, now the A's another small market team is reported "Giambi is on the verge of agreeing to a deal with the A's worth $6.5MM guaranteed - $5.25MM in '09 plus a $4MM 2010 option with a $1.25MM buyout. Quite affordable! While we really need a right handed bat in the middle of the line-up the price for decent hitters is reasonable. Also, Mike Hampton signed for $2M a year and along with Pavano both could be had for less than DCab would have received this year in arbitration? I'm perplexed?
Sorry to hear about your loss, mine was last Feb when Jeff Healy the blind blues singer passed!
Tex just blamed his wife for picking NY, like it wasn't the big bucks! Everything comes down to the schekles.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't know. I find blaming my wife for everything to be quite convenient.

Yeah Pete....Sorry for your lost....I felt the same way when former QB Sammy Baugh died at 90 years ago last week. Also, as a kid....when I found out that GI Joe was gay.

"HAWAIIAN FRIDAY" (every Fri is Hawaiian shirt day at work) will live on in memory of Shaheen....

Pete,
With a nickname like TikiTim, how cannot I not share in this loss with you. I must have 20 Hawaiian shirts in my closet at home (including 8 Tommy Bahamas and several more from Hawaii). Tonight, I will hang them all at half-mast. :-(
Mahalo!
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That's a go. I've got a rather large collection of silk shirts...make that an XX-large collection.
