Ravens already getting respect
The Vegas oddsmakers already are looking past this week's Super Bowl to the probabilities for next season, and the Ravens -- at 11-1 -- are listed as the sixth-most-likely team to win the NFL title.
Here's the link to a story on the Detroit Free Press Web site that contains the entire list from the Las Vegas Sports Consultants, a firm that advises casinos on betting lines. The New England Patriots, presumably with Tom Brady back at quarterback, are the Super Bowl favorite at 6-1, with the Pittsburgh Steelers close behind at 7-1.
I'm not surprised. The AFC again figures to be the dominant conference, with four of the top six teams. The Ravens have some questions to answer, but the progress of Joe Flacco and the prospects of retaining most of this year's defense will make it hard for them to sneak up on anybody next season.
The reason the future odds were of such interest to the people in Detroit is because the hapless Lions again will have the longest odds or winning the Super Bowl at 150-1.
Shameless plug alert: I'll be hosting Sportsline tonight on WBAL (1090 AM). If you're outside of signal range, you can log on to WBAL.com and click on the "Listen Live" icon.

How does it feel to be the new Steve Davis??? You my friend are no Steve Davis and never will be...
Do you get to do the Ravens pre and post game shows too???
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't know how it feels to be the new Steve Davis since I'm not. Just filling in for WBAL for a couple of weeks. Not a candidate for the full-time position. But thanks for the nice compliment.

Hey Pete,
I'm also wondering whatever happened to the O's getting someone for Bradford? Do you think we have a chance of getting someone like Carlos Pena in return? When will the teams finish this thing?
lmao

Hey Schmuck-
I read your blog in Google Reader. All the text is squished together (no line breaks). Can you (or whoever supports this) try to fix that. Formatting is critical and yours is the only blog that is doing this to me.
Thanks. :)

Pete's reply: I'll ask. Does it always do that?

Pete-
The Ravens should try anything to keep the "Three Amigos" (Lewis, Suggs, and Scott) in purple. If this can be accomplished, it would be a major coup for the organization. I'm one of those insane guys who believes that Lewis has not played his best season yet. With K. Grubb and/or J. Bannan up front next season to "neutralize" the opponents, it allows Lewis the opportunity to move more laterally to zero in on the ball carrier. We would, in essence have two freelancers (Lewis and Reed) on the field at the same time.
Think about it, Pete. Wouldn't it be silly to see Ray-Ray with a stupid star on his helmet next season, playing for "It's all about me" Botox Jones?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't really believe the Cowboys rumors. Too convenient. But I agree the Ravens should find a way to keep all three.

Pete-
Just an opinion, but filling Steve Davis' shoes is no major feat. He was a bit too pompous for me. Sorry to let RobBlog down, sounds like he's really bitter about you pinch-hitting for Davis...must be a Nats fan...saliva test pending.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: To each his own. The thing that I want everybody to know is that I'm pinch-hitting, not replacing.

Schmuck, I listened to Steve Davis. I knew Steve Davis. Steve Davis was a friend of mine. Schmuck, you're no Steve Davis.

Pete's reply: Does that make me Dan Quayle?

I'm not sure how they can rule the Patriots the favorites. The way things are going, Brady won't ever be able to walk right again, let alone play in an NFL game. Of course, this could all just be a very well laid out plan to try and get everyone back on the Patriots bandwagon by having Brady "miraculously" recover before the season. You never know, football is a business too, and that is a story that would sell.

i've heard that Brady's leg is not healing, and he could lose the leg.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The last report I heard was that he's doing dropback drills and will be ready for training camp.

Thank you Schmuck for not being Steve Davis, or Tom Davis, Rob Long, Howard Cossell or even Bob Costas. How boring would that be if you all had the same point of view and style. I think all of you do a great job and have an unique view of local sports. Steve will pop up somewhere soon I am sure.
Schmuck please ignore those comparisons from the feebleminded and uninformed.
And I promise to never ask you what we got back for Bradford !!!!

Pete's reply: Thanks very much. And I think it was cash.

Hi Peter,
The first blogger must have been a Davis relative or thought Steve was cute or something? Give me a break.
Why folks would write something like that makes me wonder. You do not own WBAL. I never was a huge Davis fan. I thought he got a little bit better handling callers and being more prepared and respectful the past year or so, but never thought he was anything special. I would tear him up in sports trivia, particularly Baltimore sports. I got the feeling Stan never liked him and I wonder what Quadry (spelling) really thought of him?
I do not ask you to comment on Steve, but I think you are excellent and provide a great forum that is more relaxed and you allow people to talk.
I remember the Phelps thing the one day when people were going nuts on you for the tongue in cheek Phelps was cheating article. These are the people that found Davis so good. The whack jobs. If people did not pick up the "joke", they are what they are...whack jobs.
Love your articles and your style and you would do a great job if you wanted it as full time sports guy on WBAL.
Yes, you could do Ravens too...you think??? :-) C'mon folks...it's sports for God's sakes...
O's will get there. Pie could pan out eventually and Wieters is on the way. We have talent in the farm system and let Mark the traitor Texiera go. What a liar he was...glad that princess did not come here now. I hope he gets booed the first week in NY.... start spreading the news!
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Thanks for the support. I'm a friend of Steve's and enjoyed being part of his show. I certainly understand if his fans are unhappy. Nobody is happy to see the effects of this horrible economic downturn.
Posted by: Tom | January 28, 2009 12:45 PM
Pete, Keep on pinch-hitting, I've always enjoyed when you've been on WBAL. Wish Steve luck but was not a fan of his style.
What kind of impact do you see on Major League Baseball in the next two years if the economy continues to recede?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The sport will take a hit at the gate and will have trouble renewing some sponsorship agreements. Much of the game's income comes from TV contracts, which may be locked in during that period, so I'm not sure if there will be a big hit there.

Steve Davis was one of the most arrogant ,smug, patronizing and self-important little people I ever heard on any media outlet. If you disagreed with him on any level he hung up on you and I quit listening to WBAL because of him long ago,at least when he was on,not other programs.Pete,I believe already it's an improvement, and I would be happy if they kept you on myself.IF not there are many other more qualified people who don't always feel the need to be right even when they are wrong.Good riddance.

Not to say Steve was not a good hearted person outside of the show. Some folks, not all whacks (sorry to offend) found his style appealing.
I will still wish him the best...his family and of course his son. You know Steve is a real good egg in that regard.
Ravens will draft well...get a home discount or three and make another serious run at the SB next year. but you are right...they will not be sneaking up on anyone this year...and just like a rookie hitter or pitcher after a year...Flacco will need to adjust to a league that will certainly be seeing some of his tendencies by now. I think he will be very good though over the next x amount of years. I see rings in his (and Balt's) future :-)
Posted by: Tom | January 28, 2009 7:31 PM
Hey Pete,
Do you think the coaching changes will be problematical re new schemes/philosophies/personnel - let's assume the "hometown discount" is a red herring and Oz will not "overpay", certainly not for all 3 LBs. Also, let's assume he will not "overpay" for JB on O and J Leonhard. Big changes may be a'brewing - do you see some regression possibilities? Plus, the Wiz has yet to prove he knows receivers!
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm waiting to see what happens in the receiver department. I think they'll keep at least two of the linebackers and can weather that loss with an improved offense.
