Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

I'd rather imagine the Orioles signing a "QUALITY" starting pitcher but we both know that ain't never going to happen.... The only difference between an Oriole fan and a Pirate fan... they have 5 years more consecutive years of losing experience. Now there's a shameless plug for you.

Peter, I wanted to know if you have anything , anything at all, about Troy Patton. I haven't heard a peep in about a year. Any updates?

Pete's reply: The talk is he'll be ready to throw in spring training, but will probably start the season at the Triple-A level. But who really knows what will happen out of training camp?

yeah like that would ever happen lolz.

Pete's reply: Don't see the O's trading half their youth movement for two older guys. They would have a good offensive team for a year or two and finish fourth or fifth and then be right back where they started.

Hey Pete, heard you on WBAL radio while at lunch and I could not agree with you more about cell phones.. I worked without them for my first 20 years of employment and did just fine. If we have to hav'em,all I want is one that goes "ring ring, hello'. I also hate it when people use them while in elevators and in check out lines, nor am I interested in what their favorite song is when it rings.
On another issue, why don't the Orioles go ahead and try to sign fee agent Pat Burrell. We need a right handed power bat and the guy hit 33 home runs last year. Maybe he can even play first base a little. I know he vetoed a trade that would have brought him here once, but of the hitters left on the market, he seems the most viable.
What say the Swami of the sports media?

Pete's reply: I would certainly take him, just because he's an exciting hitter, but don't think the O's are willing to meet his price because he isn't going to be a difference-maker this season.

That blogger on cbssportsline is smoking those left-handed cigarettes again. A trade like that would make absolutely no sense for the Birds. I like the idea of bringing in Burrell, but I tend to think you're right Pete, I don't think the Birds would meet his asking price. Happy New Year!
