Ravens guessing game

In what must have seemed like an act of shameless self-promotion, I reminded everyone in my previous post that I called Ed Reed's two interceptions in The Baltimore Sun's midweek Ravens predictions. I meant the "personal pat on the back" as something of a joke, since I didn't get the score right and I wasn't exactly the Lone Ranger picking the Ravens this week. For that matter, it was no great act of clairvoyance to predict Reed's two interceptions, since he had two picks in each of the team's previous three victories.

The great thing about predictions is that nobody -- including me -- remembers them when they're wrong and everyone -- also including me -- is quick to remind you of the ones that are right. I didn't even remember my Wednesday prediction until somebody pointed out that Roch Kubatko predicted the same score (23-9) in his blog, but we both would have been pretty puffed up if the Ravens had settled for a field goal at the end instead of Joe Flacco's QB draw for a touchdown.

I'll try to do better next week.

The Ravens advance and the Dolts go home...not a bad start to the playoffs.

If I were Pittsburgh I'd sure be kinda scared of what they have to face to make it to the SB...beating the Chargers at home, then having to either beat Baltimore for a 3rd time in one season ot taking on Tennessee in Tennessee where they got their heads handed to them a couple of weeks ago.

The Ravens must feel pretty confident on the other hand...evn though they are 0-3 combined against Tennessee and Pittsburgh, they lost all 3 games by a combined 10 points and all inside the last minute of each game.

And in 2 of the 3 losses, the opponent needed divine intervention by the striped shirts...let's just hope we don't get either of those crews!!

Good game Reed. Great game by Ravs D....but keep in mind, Fins O is at best, average. (Titans have a much better O)
The difference in this game was the constant pressure on Chad which forced him into throwing the interceptions.

Good luck Ravs!

Too bad Reed can't run kickoffs back, the Ravens would never lose. What an athlete. he shoud have gotten MVP instead of puffin Payton.

The ravens defense speeds the game up so much that it throws the other teams offense out of sync, they have to do the same thing to Collins next week.Hopefully they can put enough points on the board against the tough Titan D.

Pete-
Ed Reed - "MDW" (Most Dangerous Weapon). I try to imagine being an opposing quarterback, breaking the huddle and approaching the line. You're already thinking, "where's Ed Reed"? He's already inside the quarterback's head. I also believe that defensive wizard Rex Ryan gives Reed even more carte blanche to "freelance" once the Ravens extend their lead.

I've never seen a professional football athlete like Reed. The other NFL teams salivate at the dimension Reed gives the Ravens that all others lack and most assuredly covet.

What I like best about these guys is that they're not getting caught up in all the bs (like we fans are) about "lack of respect" and " the (league/refs/vegas/espn/taglia**** - pick one) are just out to get us" but are just taking care of business. When they lost 2 games due to obviously substandard officiating they, to a man, took the blame for letting the other guys score anyway and moved on to the next week. No bitching about getting the short week after no bye week. Just "lets' move on and get ready for the next guys". Very mature attitude and a tribute to John Harbough.

And while on the subjects of Harbough and "respect", did anybody else notice that our guy got exactly the same amount of votes for Coach of the Year as Flacco got for Offensive Rookie of the Year - 0! The absolute best break the Ravens got all year is when Jason Garrett turned us down. Probably a topic for another post but the same is probably true for the O's when Joe Girardi turned us down.

Anyway, we're having a lot more fun right now than I thought we would.

Pete, what's a "Long Ranger"? I didn't think you were particularly tall.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Was there a typo there? If so, somebody other than me fixed it.

Peter- It is a travesty that Flacco and Harbough got 0 votes for their respective rewards. Deion Sanders on the NFL Network last night was blatently wasting the writers that vote on certain things. Manning was not worthy of the MVP, that it was a cop-out vote and Ed Reed deserved it, James Harrison, or Phillip Rivers. Do you agree with most of that? He also was quick to point out that Pennington is the worst choice for comeback player. That he was hurt last year. There were guys that were not in the league last year that played extremely well for their teams. Also, you shouldn't be able to win that award 2 times because it shows how lame you are.
The O's have to land Kawakami. Its a must.

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Now that the Colts have lost, it's easier to argue against Peyton. I agree with the idea that you shouldn't be able to win Comeback Player of the Year twice. Doesn't make sense to me either.

Water covers 2/3 of the earth, Ed Reed covers the rest.

my thanks goes out to the chargers for doing something we could have never done, and that is beat the colts. now that there out of the playoffs, we have a chance to go all the way. we must generate more offense than we did in miami, that was a defensive win,as always. we must score offensive points to stay in the playoffs.Go Ravens

Pete , I think you are puffed up enough after this game , what's the Titan game look like master ?

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I haven't submitted my prediction, grasshopper, but I'm feeling a stronger offensive performance this week, which would certainly help since they can't reasonably expect Reed to intercept two passes every playoff game...or can they?

Has Cam thought about Ed Reed as a receiver in the red zone? The Ravens seem to struggle scoring 6. I'd bet the defense would at least call a time out to discuss who was to cover Ed.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I wouldn't rule out anything with Cam, though Rex might body slam him if he tried that.

If the ravens expect to beat the Titans sunday, they will have to turn to page 2 in the playbook, for one of the few times this year.

Ed Reed! Ed Reed! Ed Reed! Did we mention Ed Reed???

Actually, the Titans' offense is not appreciably better than the Dolphins', and Pennington is on balance a better QB than Collins is. Statistically, in fact, the Dolphins were much better offensively than theTitans although I know you have to discount that some because of the Dolphins weak-ast schedule. IMO the Ravens will shut them down same as earlier in the season. Now if only we can scrape up enough points ourselves.

On the pregame show Cowher picked Miami over the Ravens, THEN declared the Bengals will make the playoffs next year- obviously leaving the Ravens out, behind them and his beloved Squeelers next year. What a tool. He doesn't do a bad job on the desk, but as I said - a tool.

The Sun should post today's article by Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. He is absolutely sure of a Ravens-Steelers rematch.

Hey Pete I predicted 28 to 10 but to be honest it shoulda been higher for the Ravens. Two non calls at or in the end zone. One on Heap and one on Mason. Did anyone else think they got interfered with. One last thing when Flacco scored and was down Miami creamed him. No call. Referees have been pitiful this year. John

ed reed, defensive player of the
year hands down....

everyone who is a ravens fan,
knows this ball hawk is the best
secondary man in the league....

fumbles and interceptions he
just has an innane knack for the ball...

the u of miami has turned out
alot of good pro players, and ed
is certaintly an all pro every year...

Let those great players on other teams win all the awards. You know Dan Marino would give em all up for a championship ring. This group of Ravens has a great chance now because they play as a team. The 2 best awards are still out there. Superbowl MVP and Superbowl Champions.

Here's my call on Saturdays game. Ravens don't turn over the ball we win. Ravens 20 Titans 10

Pete
Try as you will and congratulations; my prediction: Ravens Pilly I-95 Superbowl show down. Well at Florida stateline you'll have to exit.

Pete-
Coach Harbaugh has instilled a bit of humility in this team. The "one game at a time" mentality is a perfect ploy. It will take them to Tampa to play the Panthers. McGahee will have the game of his career, but I'm not getting a feel as to who will win the game.
On another note, I can't say I'm overly impressed with your predicting how many "snags" Reed is going to have...it's easy math...three is too much and zero is too little...

Hey Pete,
Congratulations on your Score Prediction !
If you recall, I asked a few weeks if Joe would be the first Rookie Q-B to win a super bowl, If that became the case.
I wonder if we should begin to consider that a prediction ?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That's fine with me. And, once more for the record, I didn't pick the Ravens score right. I only predicted the two interceptions by Reed.

We're gonna eat Collins alive AWWWWWK!

ooops forgot my pick - 31 - 16
