Ice, Ice Baby!

In my quixotic quest to become a knowledgeable hockey fan, I'll be in front of the TV at 6 today for the NHL All-Star Game. The television broadcast will be on Versus, the sports channel for people who hate ESPN and can't find the new MLB Network.

I've tried to spend more time around the Washington Capitals this year, even after nearly cracking my skull at their Media Fantasy Camp a few months ago, but my lofty intentions were pre-empted by the surprising success of the Ravens. I wouldn't even be able to watch tonight if they had beaten the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game, because I would be on a plane to Tampa right now. (Do I sound bitter?)

Oh well, Alex Ovechkin and friends await. Check it out.

Pete, hockey is an awesome game. You've got to get into it. Ovechkin is the best player in the game because of the way he plays -- he's all over the place on the ice and always throwing his body around, not to mention his goals. You've gotta be in hockey watching shape by April because the Caps will be the No. 2 or 3 seed in the East.

From a lifelong hockey fan I say, "Thank you, Peter, for at least attempting to get the world's most exciting athlete - Alex Ovechkin - in front of people who only have to drive an hour to see him ply his trade!"

Pete, just so you'll know,Benefiber's new slogan is 'the yuck stops here' Don't you have a copyright infringement case here?

Pete's reply: I'll have my lawyers get right on it.

Pete,

Lifelong O's fan who now resides in Tampa. Don't feel so bad, we had a cold spell with the high was on 65 last week. It was brutal. Mid 70's this week though...

Pete's reply: Thanks, I do feel much better now.

If you are going to watch hockey, you don't want to watch the all star game. It doesn't resemble a real game at all. They shouldn't even use goalies, it is as bad as the football all star game.

I just wish they would eliminate fighting and then it would be faster paced and more like the olympic games.

Pete's reply: I agree, but I'd pay just watch Alex skate. The only All-Star Game that feels even close to real is baseball's.

Good for you, Pete. There's nothing quite like the game of hockey, or, as we call over here in Europe, Ice Hockey...

Pete-

Didn't know you gave a puck about this sport. In our "glory days" we had the Baltimore Clippers in the AHL. We used to have great fun in the sixties, going to what was then the Civic Center. My dad used to always take us when the Hershey Bears were in town. That was a guaranteed brawl. (By the way, is it still PC to call them hockey matches and not games?)

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
