Waiting for Ravens kickoff: Random thoughts

dereksun.bmpJust some stuff that crossed my mind while I was waiting for someone to throw out the ceremonial first "Bring Back Sammy Sosa" post:

If you're a Ravens fan, today has to feel a lot like Christmas, and it's not like you have to strain your memory to make the comparison. Four months ago, you would have settled for seven wins and some noticeable growth in rookie (reserve) quarterback Joe Flacco. Instead, the Ravens are a few hours away from playing their Week 17 game with a playoff berth in the balance. Happy Holidays, indeed.

Let's start a rumor that Mark Teixeira will be sitting in Steve Bisciotti's suite today. Why not? He's got enough money now to invest in the team.

Sure, it would be nice if the Buffalo Bills suddenly rose up and trounced the Patriots, if only so we don't have to watch Derrick Mason (right) pop his shoulder back into place after each of his eight receptions today, but that's probably asking too much.

My wife hasn't touched her new Craftsman tool set since Christmas morning. Her engine is still knocking. I mean, what's the deal here?

After the Cowboys lose to the Eagles in Philly today, I think they ought to mike up Terrell Owens and Roy Williams and turn that trainwreck into an HBO reality series.

Frankly, I don't think I've ever seen a more poorly coached football game than last night's Emerald Bowl in San Francisco. Miami's clock management at the end of the first half and at the end of the game was beyond explanation and Cal's offensive playcalling was incomprehensible. Other than that, it was a pretty good game.

Went to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on Friday night. Just got back.

Pete
since we're going random here i have a random question for you. Why do most people think that Matt Ryan will be rookie of the year over Flacco? I mean Ryan has slightly better numbers, but Flacco played a much tougher schedule. I tried to compare them thinking that it would make more sense but then i found the best team they played outside their division was probably none other than the 8-7 arizona cardinals. We had to play the Giants. and the Titans. The worst teams (no offense meant) they played were the detriot lions, oakland raiders, and the kansas city cheifs. We also played oakland, and we play jacksonville (5-10) today. is it just me (which i'll admit is possible) or does everyone think Ryan's better because he was a higher draft pick?

Pete's reply: I fear that there will be some bias associated with the draft, though that's obviously unfair. They both are very deserving.

Pete,

Benhamin Button was a pretty good flick! Wife and daughter convinced me that I wouldn't be a good Dad unless I went with them. I was hoping to see Clint in Grand Torino but it won't be around here until January! Button reminds me of the O's - in the end they will just fade away!

Hope the Ravens don't take the Jags lightly today. I would like to see the offense hold onto the ball all day long. Run Run Run in the first half and beat the living daylights out of the Jags.

Pete's reply: I agree that "Button" was a very good film, but it was also very long, which was why I made the joke about it. Definitely worth seeing. Just bring your Flomax.

Another random question.... When is Ray rice expecting to return? any time table?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The team is hopeful he'll be ready for the playoffs...if the Ravens hold this lead and get into the playoffs.

maybe ryan is getting more publicity because he was a bigger name in college and he replaced vick and all the nonsense with vick and their coach leaving after one yr. ryan has michael turner who is performing better than any ravens running back so that helps the cause for flacco but people still see the ravens as a defensive team which takes the attention away from flacco.

I believe pro football's MVP should be determined by how that person impacts a game on a given day. Having said that, Ed Reed is hands down the NFL's MVP this season. He has the innate ability through his abundant talent to change games through his gambling instincts. When the opposing team falls behind, Reed is given even more license to free-lance. Mr. Reed is the straw that stirs the drink on this great defense (with all due respect to Ray-Ray).

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
