Ravens: Willis steps in it again

Maybe I'm being too hard on Willis McGahee, but I couldn't help but read his comments today and wonder if the lights are on and there's just nobody home.

Given the opportunity to back away from some statements on a recent radio show that made him look like a very selfish guy, he simply reinforced the notion that he's a very self-centered player. Take a look at Bill Ordine's story and draw your own conclusions.

I see nothing amiss with these remarks. Guy wants to produce, wants to have a big year, and you're upset because he feels bad he hasn't played a bigger role? I'd feel the same way -- and so would Ray Lewis. What should he say, "I'm happy for the young guys and just glad to be here?"
That's a nitwit cliche. Something out of nothing, that's what this controversy is.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No, but you don't say 'I'm just playing for me" the week of a playoff game.

A selfish football player.

How is this news?

Check that.

A selfish, stupid football player.

How is that news?

Stop trying to stir things up!! The man has had a horrendous season and he is not happy about it. Maybe the way he said it was wrong but he's a football player not an English major on the debate team. I don't care what he says because he wants to perform and he obviously doesn't like it when he doesn't perform. What's wrong with that?

I don't know Peter. It sounds to me like he's saying (and he probably could have done a better job of it) that he's glad the team has played well, he just wishes he could have contributed in a bigger way and that no matter what the team does, the season will still be a "personal" disappointment to him. Sounds like what a star baseball player would say if he hit .250, had 10 HRs and 65 RBI's, but his team won the World Series. He's glad his team won but he wishes he was a bigger part of it.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That may be what it sounds like today, but how about the quotes two days ago when he said, unequivocably, "I'm playing for me."

I gotta go with Mr. Preston on this one Mr. Schmuck. Before reading his McGahee article, I felt McGahee was being very self centered. But after reading it, I have to side with McGahee on this one. I would be pissed off too if I was often injured and didn't contribute the way I know I could.

Let's see how he plays then.
Pete, With the new MLB Nework starting tomorrow, do you think it can keep from playing favorites with Yankees and Red Sox?

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Guess we're about to find out.

The guy has played well and HARD the past two games and NOW you guys get on him. When he was having bad games and admitting it, he was a stand up guy. Now he's a cancer. Why? I know it's your job to report, but why try to interpret during a playoff week? You're the only paper in town, you don't need to scoop anyone. You call him selfish? Look in the mirror boys.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: If you looked like me, you wouldn't have any mirrors, but don't blame us for reporting the news. He said those things. You want us to stop reporting the facts and get on the Ravens bandwagon? Think about it one more time. That's not really what you want from your local newspaper.

Don't worry, our friend Anita Marks will defend him. Too easy just to let your actions on the field speak for you I guess.

Folks, his AUDIO comments speak for themselves! Don't be an apologist for him. He made it clear - he is only about himself. When Gates in San Diego didn't have a CATCH in 3 straight games - any comments? nope. When Payton had a bad SIX game stretch, did he talk about ME, ME, and ME?

At least T.O. only blamed destiny, and not the coaches on his bad luck at the end of their season.

He's a wart on the Ravens - hope he is removed as soon as possible.

Is Musa still available?

McGahee is a self centered bum of an athelete, and there are way too many of them in sports today! Any athlete wants to comtribute to the effort that a team puts out to be a winner, and wants to be the first string guy that puts up the numbers to help the team to accompllish it's goals. The point here is that your own personal numbers are secondary to the accomplishments of the team as a whole, If Mcgahee feels the way he has stated and keeps it to himself and goes out and performs with 100% effort each day he practices and plays, then it its fine with how he feels. Thhe problem is that you DO NOT come out and say it to the media and you do not put your own numbers and effort related to those numbers before the accomplishments of your team, you are being paid to do your job for the benefit of the team to win! Do you think the owner is paying millions of dollars to the athlete so the athlete can go out on the field for his own personal gain no matter whether the team wins or loses? Absolutley not!

As I said yesterday, put McGahee on the" McAllister Express" as fast as you can and get guys like them out of town, they are a cancer to the Ravens and will be a cancer to any team they play for, just ask the people in Buffalo, they went through this with Mcgahee before we did. Good buy and good riddance to Mr. self centered, selfish Mcgahee, we do not want you and we do not need you , we have done just fine with your sorry _ss on the bench!!!

let's look at the school willis went to "the U". maybe people there think the university of miami is the only university in the country and thus "the u". however there are at least 2,600 accredited colleges and universities in the u.s. so it can't be that. after a close look i can't seem to find "u" in the name m i a m i. maybe miami has a silent invisible "u" in it. if someone can explain how the university of miami is "the u" maybe that person can explain what willis is saying. though i would think the explanation would be similar to the type of explanation willis gives. you would walk away saying something like "huh"? in other words fans let it be. willis isn't going to make a lot of money as a public speaker. just hope going back home he plays like he played in the first miami game. let his playing do his talking for him. much easier to understand that.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I've always wondered about that, too. Maybe if Miami produces more players like Willis, they'll change the nickname from "The U" to "The me."

peter- isn't someone putting their foot in their mouth when they say something, then is embarrassed by it? I don't think Willis cares. This is more like, Willis....A Dick. That should be the title.
Also, the O's have to sign one of the upper level Pitchers right? I mean, it is gonna be really really ugly with Guts all by himself having to carry the team. I know they made their final offer to Kawakami, but apparently it is not that much money in base. It is incentive heavy. I don't know why they toy around. Man, is their a worse organization in pro sports? The lions, then the O's. I have never seen more blatant disregard for the fans by their own team with the exception of when Erse took the Colts away. They could take 25 million and sign 2 of the better starters case closed. Little risk, financially safe. But, they really don't care. "We're rebuilding". So, that makes losing OK? What about the last 11 years?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think you're right. They should get at least one solid starter, but I have my doubts they will.

Peter- What about Giambi? 1 year with an option, and he is as good as here 2morrow. That would be fun. Huge OPS.

If you report out of shape and you can't perform, whose fault is that?

If you want to play for yourself, get in shape for yourself. Not to mention the money you're being paid.

This does not explain his two-step, side-step, drop style.

He ran the same way last season, but had enough carries to have 1,200 yards--but who was the QB last year?
(and who was calling the plays?)

He has shown what he can do, and 1,200 yards is about 2/3 of the productivity he is able to give, if he plays to his apparent potential.

The answers from today? Just confusion and attempts at damage control. Once Ray talks to him, his story might change for the better.

Peter, we agree on something... McGahee has been a cancer on this teasm from day 1. There's a reason that Buffalo got rid of him. If you can't have the biggest heartbeat on a team, Ray Lewis, knock some sense into you then your worthless.

Ya think he could have waited until after the season was over to run his mouth. And when you run your mouth make sure you out-performed the guy who took your place.

I got a feeling that Lewis and Reed took him on the side after running his mouth and told him to shutup. The Playoffs are too bg for those two guys to let McGahee screw it up.

Now about those Orioles...

Pete, you are right to report it. I was wrond on that point. It's just that this is the ONLY good sports team that we have. I guess I was wanting you to be the Tom Davis of the Ravens. Happy New Year

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Happy New Year to you and yours. I don't think the Willis thing will hurt the Ravens. Maybe the opposite because it's on him to prove he's giving 100 percent.

Pete , you are absolutely correct on this ,while we all know Willis is not the brightest bulb in the pack , comments like this during a playoff run are not good for the team. This is a positive time for teams making the playoffs and we don't need any negativity............Go Ravens.........

Yes, Mcgahee should feel bad about the season he has had..and he should feel even worse that rather than attend the off season camps he chose to run with his posse in Miami. Then he came to training camp overweight and out of shape, so who is to blame for his poor season?.

We may never know, but it would be interesting to know if and what Harbaugh says to Mcgahee about this distraction just prior to a playoff game.

Everybodys always known about this trait with McGaheehehehe..Why complain now,he is who he is no different than TO.The Ravens will dump this guy as soon as they can because he doesn't accept the team concept. The same reason Miggy and Hernandez are gone.

"I'm used to competing, but with the injuries and whatnot holding me back, I look at it as a loss."

Does that mean he is giving his paychecks back? That would be a real loss.

I am not backing Willis here because I don't really like him. He ran soft all year long. I think what he said is more a product of him just being really dumb and not realizing what he's saying rather then being as selfish as his remarks are.

Maybe Willis should read your blog motto, Pete. LOL

So does that mean he plays hard for a contract next year or play soft so he does not get hurt?

HEY SPORTS FANS: Lets hold our judgement til 4 pm on Sunday. If WILLIS goes out there and wins the game for the RAVENS, I could care less what he says. Think about it: It means nothing, like the last 8 months of POLITICS we have been forced to listen to ...
What Willis does between the white lines is all that really Matters!
... PREDICTION: Regardless of what WILLIS does and counts against the CAP.. He will be HISTORY by next JUNE. And, be somebody else's Problem!

Willis is a self promoter. He should hire a better agent, though. The one he has is misspeaking and inviting too many comments this happy time of the season.I hope 80 deg. weather makes him sizzle and forget all his problems down in Miami.Dash and slash, Willis!!
