Ravens: Never fails
Is it just me, or does every big game that the Ravens play end with some kind of strange play or official's call. The only touchdown of the game comes with 46 seconds left and there was no conclusive proof that the ball ever broke the plane of the end zone.
The officials called it like a catch out of bounds, where if you have two feet in bounds and have control, then the ball doesn't have to be in. We'll be getting a clarification in a few minutes, but I doubt that's going to be any consolation to Ravens fans, who may have seen the team's shot to make the playoffs slip away in the replay booth.

Maybe while they explain this replay again, they can also explain how a guy can get stuffed at the line but yet still be given a first down (regardless of the number of views showing he never crossed the first down marker). It is so frustrating watching so many plays get decided by the referees inability to make the correct decision.

Yea that was a B.S. call. It looked like he still had a foot off the ground when he got hit. But as we all know.... officials hate Baltimore teams.... I think that Umps and Refs should get their pay docked EVERY TIME they blow a call.. Who watches the watchers?
"p" is for Poor Officiating!!!!

Atrocious! Times 2. So I guess we get a call from the league on Tuesday: "Oops. Looks like the zebras made a boo boo or 2. Sorry 'bout that. Our bad. See you next year."
And they wonder why us Baltimorons have a persecution complex. Are you certain Paul Taglia**** isn't still commissioner? Why even bother with instant replay if they still can't get it right?

The ball never broke the plane of the end zone, and should not have been a score, but the offensive game plan today was horrible. Instead of playing to win, they were playing not to lose, and that rarely works. The Ravens lost both games to the Steelers because of poor coaching decisions, and they could have just as easily won both games. Still, realistically, who could have foressen that this team would have won 9, 10, or maybe 11 games (if they win out)? I figured they'd be lucky to win 5 with a rookie QB.

What a joke. They missed the play that Pittsburgh got a first down on and they missed the TD. Unbelieveable. This is the best they have for refs? Biggest game of the year and they absolutely blow 2 calls. There definitely was no proof he had possession of the ball and his feet were in the end zone. The refs should be ashamed. No reason for botched calls like this. They don't overturn one call (that they clearly should have) and overturn another where there is no proof. Even the guys in the booth agreed.

That's two games against pittsburgh this season where the refs have cost us. That joke of a personal foul call againist suggs that kept pitt's drive alive to force overtime in Pittsburgh. Now today they give pitt a first down when their FULLBACK never got to the line of scrimmage, let alone their running back...result: 3 points for pittsburgh when the ravens had stopped them.
Then a touchdown when the ball never crossed the goal line. That head official must be an ACC ref in the offseason, because the coach K fix was in there.
Love the blog Pete.

Pete, I can hear all the conspiracy theorists now. With that said, the officiating in the game today was awful. Roger should worry more about his officiating being a detriment to the game, just as much as the stupid things players do off the field.

Pete,
The refs have way to much impact on the outcom of a game. This crew blew two huge calls today. The ball must cross the plane of the goaline plain and simple! I have a great old chant for the end of these close games.

The refs rob the Ravens twice. In the second Q, they ruled a first down on a 3rd and 1 when the ball never cracked the 30 yard line. Steelers would have gone 3 and out.
And then at the end. How sad. We could have watched the steelers decide to go on 4th and 1 or kick a tying FG, but the refs take the ball off the field.
I'd like to see the #6 ravens go to #1 pittsburgh in the divisional round. Try winning 3 times. I'll take the 3rd game win, when it means the most.

Peter- If ever there was a game to proove how f'ing lucky the steelers or stealers, are, this was it. A MUFF PUNT that gives them a field goal. A FUMBLE, knocking us out of FG range, and a CALL, THAT I AM STILL WONDERING WHO PAID THE REF TO CLAIM THAT THERE WAS IIREFUTABLE EVIDENCE TO OVERTURN? DOES HE HAVE A F'ING PROTRACTOR IN HIS POCKET AND FORMULATE 3RD DIMENSIONAL PLAINS ON A 2 DIMENSIONAL SURFACE?
I MEAN?? DID HE HAVE TIME TO CALL THAT GUY THAT PROOVED IT WAS NOT A 1ST DOWN IN THE 58 CHAMPIONSHIP, NO MATTER HOW MUCH GIFFORD CRIES ABOUT IT?

This is unbelieveable. Even the Pittsburgh fans watching the game with me agreed this play did not meet the definition of a touchdown.
Baltimore was robbed - and the Ravens should feel very wronged.

Seemed like we got hosed pretty hard by the zebras there.
On the other hand, that's a case of, "Well, if you hadn't let them drive 92 yards to get there..." Scant consolation there either - especially if it turns out to be the wrong call, which is what the TV broadcasters seemed to think! The ref also blew the video review of the spot in the first half. Not a good day for the guy.

Well, maybe a little defense might have helped on the Steelers final drive. The refs also had alot of none calls on the Ravens when thet held James Harrison one most every play. They also did not call any pass interference calls on the Ravens when it was clear they should have. The Ravens play calling was suspect and the sack of Flacco putting the Ravens out of field goal range is proof. The Ravens had field position all game long and could not seal the deal. Bottom line,,,,,,,the better team won!

I found it interesteing that the referee never addressed whether the ball crossed the plane in his explanation. Does that not mean anything? I don't get it.

Going off memory... Tennesse game there was a head tap/roughing the QB call on their game winning drive... 1st Steeler game unnecessary roughness on 3rd and long on game winning drive... and this. Bad Luck? Conspiracy?

"Bottom line,,,,,,,the better team won!
"
Jack, are you serious? Out of the 120 minutes they've played against each other this season I'd say the Ravens had control for 100 unless I'm mistaken. Bottom line is Steelers have pulled plays and calls from the offcials out of their you know whats the last two games.
Here's to a first round playoff match against the Colts and a second round match against the Steelers so Baltimore can finally put away all its demons

Why does everyone worry about the two calls? What about all of the missed calls the refs didn't call against the Ravens? The TV commentators even kept talking of this? Why can't people leave it go and realize those calls didn't lose the game. Hey at least the ref had BALLS to over turn a call on the home team? Until that point they were homers.
Posted by: sportnut | December 14, 2008 10:53 PM
I hope enough steeler fans left their terrible towels around the Baltimore stadium there seems to be alot of crying going on there. Dry your eyes you still may make the playoffs and get beat by a better steeler team again.
Posted by: Emery Kleban | December 14, 2008 11:06 PM
Ony crybabies complain about the referees! Don't stop a team for 92 yards, then look for a reason to blame someone else. How about no touchdowns while instead the 20 yard line three times? Simple enough, score more points and you win and no I live in Baltimore.
Posted by: Henry | December 14, 2008 11:13 PM
Ughh... If the Ravens had capitalized on their opportunities it would not have come to this. Still, we got hosed and I threw my remote at the TV.
The Steelers are the luckiest team in the league.
Posted by: Pathetic Fan | December 15, 2008 12:27 AM
The call was correct, stop your crying. Ever see a player crash into the pylon at the front of the endzone ? Ever see a player in the front corner of the endzone have two feet down but catches the ball on the outbounds side of the pylon ? There both td's and so was that. The replay people got it right and you all got it wrong. Ha
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Obviously you have no understanding of the rules if you think it's called the same as an out-of-bounds catch. I don't know if they got it right or not, but it wasn't conclusive and you know that.

I've got to agree with Jack Splat and Sportnut. The refs missed a lot of calls that should have been penalties on the Ravens. If you look at it objectively, the refs got the call right on the touchdown. Did I see Terrell Suggs limp off in the 4th quarter? I wonder if someone got a bounty on that one? And what about Walker spitting on the Steelers holder after the extra point? Is there something about playing in Baltimore that makes a player spit (a la Robbie Alomar)? And then the Steelers kicker shoves Walker around like he's a rag doll. No class and pretty whimpy on the Ravens part. I see in the Sun poll 80%+ feel the Steelers are the better team and the Ravens will not be playing in January. They got that call right. You've got to play 60 minutes of football, not 58. Big Ben schooled Little Joe last night.

So the refs may or may not have made a bad call....where was that number two defense in the end. 90 plus yard drive....both defenses played great but at crunch time yours failed...deal with it....
Posted by: jeff | December 15, 2008 9:35 AM
Maybe while there explaining the touchdown and the first down, they can go ahead and exlpain how the ravens got away with holding James Silverback Harrison just about the entire game without one penalty. Or.. how 3 times when the steelers got a big play on offense there was a mysterious holding call that they never replayed so no one got to see it. Or explain how when the rubber meets the road the Steelers continue to just drive right down the field making big plays no matter who the defense is.

I love it when fans come in saying crap like, "Why does everyone worry about the two calls? What about all of the missed calls the refs didn't call against the Ravens?" and, "The refs also had alot of none calls on the Ravens when thet held James Harrison one most every play. They also did not call any pass interference calls on the Ravens when it was clear they should have."
If the Steelers had lost this game on a disputed touchdown, Steelers fans would be complaining just as much as Ravens fans are.
It's obvious that the Ravens could have played better. Their offense was non-existent for the entire game and their defense fell apart in the fourth quarter, especially on that last drive.
But anyone who honestly believes that that play was actually touchdown clearly doesn't understand the rules of football. Even Mike Tomlin said "whether or not the ball crossed the plane... I didn't have that kind of perspective. And I still don't have it..." And when asked if he saw any conclusive evidence from the coaches tape of the play, Tomlin said: "No."
So, Steelers fans, face it. It was a bad call. Your team got lucky. Hopefully the Ravens and Steelers will meet in the playoffs and we'll get a fairly called game.

I agree with the comments posted by jeff. When the Ravens have the second best rank defense in the NFL, teams should not be able to mark down the field, especially on critcial drives when the defense HAS to make a stop! The Ravens simply didn't do the job again with a quality opponent, and it cost them the game.

You Steeler Fans amaze me. You wave your rags and pound your chests about being the best fans in the NFL. And yet aren't you the same fans that booed your team off the field at Halftime the last time we played.
Your defense is outstanding and outplayed ours. Your offense was just good enough to get the job done. You got a couple of breaks and you won the game and the North. So enjoy the victory and stop worrying about what we think or say. Because you know darn well, that if the cleat was on the other foot. You would be doing the crying and we would be doing the gloating.
Posted by: joe | December 15, 2008 2:34 PM
if your team was not the most ....talking team in the nfl, that over celebrates every tackle, and is as ghetto as a team can be...MAYBE you will get a call. Everyone I know in every city I visit hates baltimore football. The team leader should be in jail for life! Refs are human too!
