NFL job fair opens
There are so many open head coaching positions in the NFL, I just got a call from the Lions. I'm flattered, of course, but it's really not the right situation for me and my family at the present time.
Brian Billick's name was being thrown around for a GM/coach role in Detroit six weeks ago, but I've got to believe he would rather do TV and enjoy his new home on the Eastern Shore than get involved in that mess. The Broncos or Jets, however, might be attractive if Billick (right) gets any traction in this year's coaching merry-go-round.
The Broncos job would be a plum for anybody. Good organization. Good ownership. Played for a division title just a few days ago. Those kinds of positions don't come open that often. Right now, however, the name on everybody's lips -- and in just about every situation -- seems to be Cowher.
I'd love to be able to throw out the ceremonial first Rex Ryan rumor, but me and Willis McGahee just want to keep the focus on the Dolphins right now.

I could see Billick in Denver. I think that would be a good fit for him.

Does Rex Ryan give a bad interview? It would seem that he should be the next big thing in coaching. being a selfish Ravens fan, I hope he gets bypassed again.
On a different note. If I am the Browns and I just cleaned house of the GM and coach, I am celebrating Christmas all over again with the news that Shanahan just hit the unemployment line. Forget the ex Jets coach, I am pulling out all efforts to land him. The scary thing as a Ravens fan is if anyone can right that Browns train reck, its Shanahan.
Any thoughts Peter?

Pete's reply: Shanahan's a great coach, so keep him out of the AFC North.

Nice on me and Willis McGhee... I am sure that Billick would rather be rock fishing three or four times a week than having to go to Detroit and deal with that mess. There are some good coaches including Billick that are available out there, interesting to think that three or four guys with Super bowl and major playoff experience are out there now. I guess it is the old ego thing with the owners, but Detroit is a city that is in real trouble right now and I do not see any of the marquee coaches going there.

Denver would be a great opportunity for Brian. Not only would he be working for a quality organization with good talent, but he would be hundreds of miles and two time zones from Mr. Preston's cheap shots and insults . . .

Hey Peter, have the O's offered a job? 1B maybe? They're in about as good a shape as the Lions, so it would be a lateral move and you wouldn't need to relocate.

As bad as people rip on Billick for his play calling, I honestly think Billick is worse with player evaluation.

Peter. As a life long. die-hard Detroit Lions fan, (I sure know how to pick 'em), if Billick was interested, do you think he'd be a good fit there? I realize it's probably not the ideal NFL coaching job but on the other hand, there's no where to go but up. A successful Lions coach could probably be handed the keys to the city(whoops-another bad fit!).
Anyway, other than Billick, any other coaches on the radar-such as Spagnoulo-asst with NY Giants?

Pete's reply: I think Billick would be a good fit just about anywhere, but he's collecting $5 million a year from the Ravens and doing TV. Why would he take that job when he can more than afford to wait for something better.

Peter,
Do you think that Billick would be more interested in the sort-of- President of football role that Parcells had at Miami?
It seems that the more established out of work older coaches (Billick, Schottenheimer, Holmgren, etc.) might find that more attractive. If Billick were to have such a role in Detroit for example, he could bring in Ryan,or Andy Reid,as coaches and pick from guys like Savage, Harris and a number of Ravens FO personnel people.
The Lion job is a disaster but the only place to go is up and if they were any good in a year or two Billick could be an idol in Michigan.
