Huff top DH
Major League Baseball released the voting for the 2008 Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award and -- drum roll please -- it went to Orioles DH Aubrey Huff.
Huff won in a close vote over likely Hall of Famer Jim Thome, breaking a string of six straight awards for Red Sox star David Ortiz.
This has been quite a different offseason for Huff (at right celebrating a home run) than last year, when his comments critical of Baltimore on a shock jock radio show had fans calling for his head. He said in the spring that he would have to win back the loyalty of the fans by performing on the field, and he did just that, batting .303 as a DH with 23 homers and 77 RBI. Overall, he batted .304 with 32 homers and 108 RBI.

Wait.... he batted just over .300 with just over 30 hr and 100+ RBI? Jeez, those numbers sound so familiar to some other first baseman who's name escapes me at the moment. Texas...something... Agh, I'm sure it'll come back to me in a second.

Trade Aubrey now. He will not put up those numbers ever again!

Kudos to a guy who grew up last season. It's a great story.

Yeah trade him now. Then sign Teixeira. We all know Huff had a career year. Teix considers those numbers a normal year.

Any chance they might get Dunn or Ibanez to play 1B? They should be a lot cheaper than Tex, and I'd like to see what Dunn would do in Camden Yards...

Peter -
Orioles still involved in thsoe Peavy talks? Ive read a few things which seems to indicate that the Orioles have been bumped to the '4th team' and the Phillies are now more closely involved as the '3rd team'. Any indications that the O's are being shut out of this deal?
Great work by the way - both you & Jeff.

I agree: trade Huff now. Unfortunately, it seems as though the rest of the league has already figured out that he's basically a .270/.330/.450 hitter coming off a fluke season, so we can't even sell him high.

Sam-
You know it's funny. We have a guy put up great numbers here one year and O's fans want him out since his value is high. But a guy somewhere else puts up great numbers and all of a sudden he's the second coming of Sidd Finch and we need to throw a 20 year $900 million contract at him.
Thank goodness we have a rational general manager who can look at things objectively.

I remember being really excited when Huff first signed with the Orioles, because you knew he was capable of putting up these kind of numbers. He used to kill us when he was on the Rays.

So what he should do is go on some other shock-jock show, say something silly, get a minor injury and not work out, apologize, and then say he needs to win over the fans with play on the field.
Aubrey hits .300+ 30+HR and drives in 100+ runs again in 2009!
It was nice to see Huff have another great year. The Orioles were always pretty high on his bat in his Tampa days and it is good to see that they were correct on him.
You still have to wonder if that was a flash in the pan and we'll see the Aubrey of the past few seasons again: the .260 15-20HR guy.
To Sam:
The Orioles shopped Aubrey last season and there were no takers. He is a DH first, everything else second and that takes away half of your potential partners. He is also very expensive and at an age where a lot of people will think his skills are waning, not getting better. A very tough sell. Had they any takers and any decent offers, Aubrey would be gone by now.

Huff is going to have another solid year this year.
You people must be forgetting it's a contract year. He'll show up in an effort to get paid one more time.

Why does everyone believe this is a choice between Tex and Huff when we can certainly use both to cover up the multitude of sins our "pitchers" will commit...I say extend Huff for several years at $6 per and hope for the best.
A bargain at today's rates!

I think even Huff would say, "That's a horse**** award."
;)

I can't believe some folks are still dredging up the likes of Dunn. Are you kidding me? The guy is a slug! Terrible average, no outfield skills, and clogs up the base paths. If that's the case, then go get Burrell. And no I don't want him either. I'll take Huff. Limited fielding yes, but always been a pretty good hitter. And he's here!

I agree with wayner. He was loyal to Balto after dissing us and made good on his promise to make up for his off-season escapades last winter. Let's show some loyalty and bring him some support, Tex!

Hey, why all the negativity abour Huff? Give the man some credit for a great year, especially in spite of being our only real power threat. Why can't he do it again? He's only 31 and many hitters continue into their late 30's, especially if we leave him at his best position-DH?
Maybe Huff quit the late nights since getting married, etc and that could have a positive effect-no hangovers/more focus. I see him as a key part of our ofense in '09 and there's no reason to trade him at this point.
