Homeward bound

I'm heading for McCarran International Airport and my trip home to Baltimore a little later today. If I see Mark Teixeira on my flight to BWI, I'll let you know.

You might see him at the airport while he's waiting for his plane to Boston for his physical.

McCarran... Peter.

well done Pete. Good work and thankyou for the info. You are like having a man on the ground. Have a safe flight and keep up the good work.

I'm in complete agreement that the Orioles were used by Borass and Tex to get Bos/NY to pony up.

Now that being said, Baltimore pretty much has to exceed any offer that BOS/NY gives by $20 Million just as a "crappy team" penalty.

However, now that all is said, Boston fans are complete a-holes, drunk on their wins. Rem Dawg and Orsillio will yap and yap. We need to restore a balance of power in the AL East and if Tex was actually honest about any of the comments he has said in the past, he would sign with the O's.

I would love to see Tex in a Baltimore road jersey. It would really be crushing him to see him at a Red Sox home game at Camden Yards with all that Sox nation cheering him on.

Oh god, I'm so depressed..

McCarran..with an A

Throw a couple bucks into the airport's poker slots, Pete. They tend to be a little looser than your average Strip slots because the City likes the arriving sheep..uh, visitors to see bells ringing and a jackpot or two hitting for inspiration. "Greases the wheels" so to speak.

Os?

Bring-Back, O Bring-Back, O bring back the old Os to me, to me.

I can't believe this is the same team that was practically the juggernaut of the A. L. East.

Oh, for the Halcyon days of the 75 mile trip from Reston, Virginia to 33rd Street. Seeing the fresh-scrubbed marble steps, people in their Sunday best, coming out of churches as we drove down Charles Street.

And a REAL BASEBALL TEAM in the home dugout. Earl's boys--that was a real team.

Those were the days--people watching from the rooftops across from the stadium. Parking in the City College lot, because my dad was too cheap to pay a DOLLAR to park in the stadium lot. Goetz Red Hots for 75 cents. Ahhh.

It all seems like a distant memory. Well, it was like 35 years ago.

Come on Pete, buy some players and get with it again. If not, you might as well close up shop and move to Indianapolis. They seem to do well with former Baltimore teams.

All a bunch of crap. We have been HAD again.
Why there is a veteran on this team over 30 blows my mind.
By the way, PA has saved 200 million by not feilding a major league team for the past decade. Huffs 10 is gone after 09.
Thats half. Gibbons 7 and paytons 5. Thats 22 million right there. ANYONE who believes they don't have the money to sign Tex and anyone else they want is just plain dumb.
Everyone gets mad when the Yanks buy everyone, but PTI on ESPN had it best tonight. they said, "your mad because they feel the responsibility for their fans and spend the money? We guarantee that chances are your team, whoever they might be, could spend more then they are. The yanks want to win and the rest want to make money."
I agree with every word. They will pay DCAB 5 million this year? WHY? Use it for Tex? I mean what the hell is going on?

Pete, Awesome job in Vegas, as I loved reading the updates. Thanks!

I would love it if the O's get Tex, but if it doesn't happen, how is this Andy or P.A.'s Fault? Why not put some of the blame on Tex? 150 mil to play in his hometown or another 20 mil that he can't spend EVER in his lifetime, to play for another team. I couldn't care less if I am lumped in as a company man or P.A. supporter because in my opinion, the Birds made a very good offer and if it's no enough, so be it.

I think people are forgetting that guys like Dunn or Blalock are out there via free agency or trades. The winter meetings doesn't mean this is the O's roster as some have posted. Guys, you can trash the O's getting Cesar or wait to see him for yourself, then make a rational call as to whether he is good or not.

There is a long way to go from now till we get to Florida, so let's all chill. Andy was able to get rid of Ramon, sign a SS, acquire a super utility man and some prospects, plus work has been put in for the two Japanese pitchers, Looper, Byrd and other players that we don't know about.

Last thing, how can any real fan, leave a team or even say this is it if the Birds don't sign this guy or that guy? You love a team and that's it. We all have suffered, but so have tons and tons of fans from tons and tons of other teams in all different sports. No one predicted the O's run in 1989 nor the Rays run in 2008 so let's no make like the season is dead, when it hasn't even started.

P is for Positive

Pete, I wish you a pleasant and safe journey back home.

It most likely will be rainy and cold when you land. Great old Baltimore winter weather.

Winter Meeting's biggest loser...How does FRod, he of the 124 or so saves, only manage to extract a 3 yr/12 million per from a pitching-poor, bullpenless, desperate, horrifically- managed-from-the-top-on-down, moving into a new ballpark in baseball's biggest city- mess called the NY Mets?

Pete,

Thanks for all the fast and furious work out there! Keep the faith!

I can't believe people are asking Tex to leave 20 million on the table. Gimme a break; who would do that? Anyway, if the O's are willing to go to 8 or 9 yrs but not 10 that seems arbitrary and silly. The team stinks, they're gonna have to overpay, PERIOD. WHo knows in 10 yrs, 20 million could be a BARGAIN for a guy like Tex. Salaries ain't coming down. Just do it already, if it doesn't work out, you can always Trade Tex for 5 prospects

Pete, as much as I'd love to see Tex in an O's uniform, if he doesn't want to take that HUGE offer to play in his hometown in front of his friends and family and help restore his hometown team to greatness, then he isnt the type of player we want anyway. He's just another money hungry player, I don't want him and his buddy Boras in Baltimore.

10 years of rebuilding with another 10 years to go.Never going anywhere under this owner.Way to kill a proud team in 10 long years PA

I used to say I just wanted the Birds to win another pennant sometime before I died.

I still say that, but now I think it's tantamount to asking for eternal life.

He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
