Hard times for Orioles gameday staff

I mentioned this yesterday, but I'm getting more messages from Orioles gameday employees confirming that the club has notified them it is cutting staff for next season. We're not exactly talking layoffs -- since these are not full-time employees -- but it is a sign of the times (and the team) that the O's need to reduce gameday staff, apparently by about 100 employees.

With attendance in decline, it's probably logical that the Orioles peg more of their staffing to the projected size of the crowds, but that's no consolation to the people who depend heavily on that extra income. No doubt, this is partly a response to the declining economy, but it probably wouldn't be necessary if a decade of competitive decline had not cut overall attendance almost in half.

The Orioles should be embarassed that they would put an offer out of 100 plus million and can't find work for people making 8 bucks an hour (another embarassment)

Pete,

I find when many people laugh at the term trickle down economics, this is just another example of such. So I guess the game day staff wants Tex signed as well. Winning and attendance for that matter has real impacts on everyday people, Peter the Great needs to think about all of these things when increasing his offer for Tex, because if the size of the game day staff is dependent on attendance, I'm sure the O's will be able to cut a lot more if we don"t get Tex!

Pete,

I had almost forgotten, but are we still looking for pitching or are we just going to let everyone else sign the free agents and then we sign their castoffs?

Well 10 years of losing has hurt but so did allowing DC to get team this close. The Expos should have been contracted or relocated to portland Or.Angelos got a territorial compensation package but he's not going to spend it to improve the team.He bought in one of the most tight fisted GM's in the game.Any players we get will be leftovers other teams don't want. We'll spend 3-4 million for a Traschel but not 7 or 8 for a decent starter. The o's should be obligated to put a competive team on the field, not dump payroll for the sake of it.

This is more a sign of an incompetent organization causing attendance to decline than the economy. You won't need any ushers, etc. soon at the rate attendance is declining. You are also taking about folks making less than $50 a night at the games. This is embarrasing that they can't keep this satff going when they are continuing to pay people like Flanagan.

Looks like the Angels are dropping out of the Tex derby

Pete's reply: Yep.

Pete, ESPN is reporting that the Angels have removed their offer to Teixeira from the table. Can you confirm this? Any particular reason why?

While it's sad that some folks are not asked to come back, it makes business sense. Why should the team have a staff for an average 40,000 attendance when you are barely pulling in 20? Besides, I haven't a positive experience with an usher in 20 years. In fact, I could fill a page with stories of downright harassment and incompetence. Let's hope they kept the good ones.

The only answer is to steal Jason Marquis from the Cubs for Roberts and force the Cubs to pay most of Marquis's salary. Demand Pie and evn a third player. Screw McFAIL..the trade would go through.

Pete's reply: Jason Marquis, money and Pie for Roberts. I don't like that at all.

What really annoys me are the morons who like to call Andy McPhail, McFAIL. These clowns obviously don't know a thing about baseball, let alone writing. Instead of using nicknames for people, how about telling us oh, enlightened one, what YOU would do as GM? When do you call it quits on a player who is holding several teams as hostage for their mercenary needs? No doubt you would be willing to offer Teixeira $250 million for three years; then go and offer CC Sabathia $300 million (for an overweight pitcher that history shows isn't too kind on fat pitchers having lengthy successful careers. Then no doubt you'd offer AJ Burnett, whose best friend is the DL, another $200 for three years. Then of course you want the Orioles to trade for Jake Peavey and offer Brandon Fahey in return and then wonder why you can't get any deals made. Then again, you'd probably trade to get Tejada and Bedard back. Thank GOD you are NOT the GM of the Orioles, and when McPhail does bring a winning team back to Baltimore, please stay away.
