Could O's, Nats trade non-tenders?

Funny how things work in baseball. The Orioles non-tendered underachieving pitcher Daniel Cabrera and agent Mike Powers already claims to have gotten overtures from 11 teams. One of those teams is the Washington Nationals.

The Nationals non-tendered pitcher Tim Redding on Friday, and agent Tom O'Connell confirmed in an e-mail to Baltimore Sun baseball writer Dan Connolly today that the Orioles have expressed interest in signing him.

Probably won't end up going down that way, but it shows how each team sees each player through a unique prism of its own interests.

Pete-
Thanks for the blog, I'm somewhat sure it's the best thing on the internet.
That being said, I have what might be a stupid question: Now that the O's have avoided salary arbitration with Cabrera, could they hypothetically offer him a much less expensive one year deal?

Pete's reply: Yes, I believe they could, but they won't.

They are both scrubs with losing records, lousy ERAs and terrible WHIPs. DCab is three years younger, nearly a foot taller and obviously throws much harder. Redding is no upgrade.

One thing that needs to be clear, CC took the money with the Yankees mostly because the MLBPA pressured him to do so. He wanted to play in LA for less money. It was reported that MLBPA put that pressure on him and I find that to be true. MLBPA did it to Mussina! They will do it to Teixeira too!!

Pete--Take a ride on the Redding? I’d rather put the tender back on the track and put D-Cab at the back end of the rotation—that’s right the caboose.

Toot! Toot!

Any word on what other starters they may have interest in signing? Anything new on the two Japaneese pitchers? Thanks

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
