Cabrera and Nats: Perfect match
If you're waiting for me to bash Daniel Cabrera, you're going to be disappointed. I think he'll be fine with the Nats, who reportedly signed him to a one-year contract this weekend. You can lop a half-run off his ERA with the move to the National League and he suddenly looks a lot like Tim Redding, except with a Curt Schilling's-worth of untappable talent.
The thing that I'm happiest about, however, is the fact that we'll get to see him all spring. I'm guessing he pitches against the Orioles once or twice during the exhibition season, which should be entertaining. The O's and Nationals play each other six times during the preseason, including back-to-back games in Norfolk and Washington, D.C. the weekend before Opening Day.

Whats the over/under on number of major league at bats before he doesn't strike out?
I say he makes a non-strikeout out on his 28th at bat this year for a total of 41 strikeouts in a row.

But the happiest thing for Orioles fans is that this may add two automatic wins to the Orioles' schedule--two interleague series with the Nats and two Daniel Cabrerra starts equals two slam-dunk wins. Not to mention a little chin music from the former Oriole.
Add this to the alliterative match of Daniel's name and his new baseball home (D. C Playing for D. C) and you have a natural combination. An under-achieving pitcher playing for an under-achieving franchise.
Plus, he won't have to go house hunting, he can just learn the route down the BW Parkway or I-95
(I'm tempted to make a quip about Daniel's intelligence at this point, but I won't)
A marriage made in Heaven.

Now he's got to take his turn at bat. Wow, talk about some Web Bloopers. What do you think the over/under will be for homers...er, never mind homers, the over/under for total hits by the end of the season! I'm going to say "one."

I'm glad he did sign with a NL team because he is an automatic out when he bats. What really worries me the most is when he pitches, the hitters need a suit of armor for protection. We are either going to laugh when he bats or we will be enraged when he throws at somebodies head.

Hmmm...what would Sean Avery have to say about this???
Posted by: DK | December 20, 2008 8:11 PM
I, for one, hope this will be his year to become what he ought be be--a 20-10 pitcher with a 3.5 era. The O's gave it their best. Go Daniel.

I do not think anyone would want Daniel to fail. The fact is it did not work out here. One more season like last would make the management look even worse if they did go to arbitration with him and pay him double for 2009, funny how it works in real life you do not perform at your job you get a 3 % cost of living raise. In baseball you lead the league in walks, hits batsmen and close to the top in wild pitches, you get your salary doubled in arbitration.

Well, at least he'll break the record for NL pitchers in strike outs.........in total times at bat

Pete - Weren't NL ERAs actually higher than in the AL last year? Seems I heard that somehwere

Pete, You mean you're not going to be happy watching that lean, mean, hitting machine in action at the plate ???? Get the pool started, what at bat this season will Daniel get his first hit ??? No hits for the year pays double !!!

SEPTEMBER HEADLINE ( NATS STARTING PITCHER DANIEL CABRERA LEADS LEAGUE IN STRIKEOUTS ) Sadly this was for at bats, not while pitching !!!

Daniel's OK. As people have said, it didn't work here, but he was gracious after getting non-tendered. We ought to be gracious to him.

Congrats to Daniel...look forward to watching DC on MASN this summer. Just give them 6 strong innings and let their bullpen take over. Then you'll be a free agent in 2010.....and then, who knows!!!

Pete's reply: With the Orioles' luck, his career turns around right here.

I would still love to know what we turned down for DCab at the 2007 deadline.

Peter-
It appears as if all the reports are correct. The Sox have the highest offer of 8 170. The O;s have the highest annual salary at 7 150.
WHY DONT THEY JUST CALL BORAS AND ADD A YEAR? 8 172 probably gets him. GOD THIS IS FRUSTRATING.
I REALLY THINK THAT THEY ARE SIMPLY POSTURING. WE WILL NEVER KNOW.

Dayum.... a thread and not once was Teixeira's name mentioned. IMPRESSIVE. Let's see.... your next blog should be about the Ravens so that should make it 2 in a row. Keep it up Pete, you're on a roll.

I think he could blossom as a pitcher with the Nationals (and I hope the kid does). The only big problem he'll have is hitting. He should build himself a batting cage at his home with his 2.6 mil and work on hitting and bunting in the off season. If he's going to be starter you can't be an instant out and he's got a hell of a strike zone at 6'9".

Pete, looks like your "trade" of Cabrera for Redding will come true. Still not sure who "wins" but the proverbial "change of scenery" theory should help DC more, except when he is hitting.

It's sad when it comes down to rooting against people who didn't work out here or who didn't want to play here. Someone said something about Tex going to Boston and developing career-ending hip problems. Are people who say these things really able to look at themselves in the mirror? Criticize performance yes, root for a person's livelihood to go away, I think not. DCab tried here. He was a fighter, willing to throw at Yankees. He just couldn't control his stuff enough to win here. Sadly, I think he can only win on a team with an offense able to score a bunch of runs in each of his starts. The Nads aren't that.

Hey, guys, you know what?
Daniel Cabrera strikes out a lot when he bats.
I'm sure there's a joke in there, somewhere.

Pete -
Speaking of pitching, we really do need to start addressing this situation. I know I've thrown the name out there before, and you've responded, but I still think the O's ought to look at Sheets.
A big if, but if the price is right for Sheets, wouldn't it be worth the O's looking at him despite the injury risks. He still a fairly young guy. You add him, Byrd and a reclamation project like say Mark Hendrickson or even Redding, then at least you've bought some time for your pitching prospects along with perhaps a longer term solution in Sheets. Have you heard anything on what Sheets is looking for?
...........................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't know where the Sheets negotiations are, but I don't think the O's are involved. They have always shied away from the injured guys, though it might be worth looking into.

I guess Daniel will have to remove the chin music pitch from his repetoire. He has to bat now.
Posted by: Will A | December 21, 2008 1:41 PM
Pete , in re: to your comments about Sheets and the O's not being interested in injured guys , maybe they should change their criteria . Because it's obvious the way they have been operating certainly isn't working.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Maybe so, but pledge to me right now that if they sign Sheets for a bunch of money and he goes down with a sore arm in April, you won't be hammering them for screwing up as usual.

Pete , in response to your response, - at this point I would be happy if they signed ANYBODY to a bunch of money .
Posted by: the artist formerly known as jack in hebron | December 21, 2008 4:25 PM
I guess that salary decrease form $3.85 to $2.6 million is the beginning of what is to come in the the free agent market. Good luck Daniel.
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I believe he made $2.85 million last year.

DC to DC....Dumb and Dumber.
He will get lost going to the stadium.
Posted by: EC | December 21, 2008 7:42 PM
At least Cabrera won't cause any more pitching coaches their job in baltimore. I think he had a great bit of potential once but I think even that is gone as his speed has decreased. The Orioles should have traded him after his first season when they could have gotten something in return.
Posted by: atomic | December 22, 2008 1:09 AM
Good for...well, good for the O's actually. He's gone and thank god! I don't care if he turns around and goes 15-10 with a 4.20 era there because he was never gonna do it for Baltimore. Bye bye
