Ramirez-Orioles trade rumor nothing but that

Jeff Z. again filling in for Schmuck. I'm new to blogging, but I think I'm outworking him already.

The Manny Ramirez-Orioles rumors don’t appear to be dying anytime soon. We traditionally don’t write stories in the paper debunking rumors unless they become so out of control and impossible to ignore. The Manny talk hasn’t gotten to that point yet, but I will say this: Every Oriole official I’ve talked to this offseason has unequivocally denied that the club will be in on the Ramirez bidding. I’ve even been playfully chided for posing the question, as if to say, ‘I should know better.’

The rumor smells like BS from SB to unsettle the market and get more money for Ramirez.

Ramirez??????? Does the name Albert ring a Belle?????????? Nix it, put another nail in the coffin.

If the O's are going to bring a Ramirez it should be Hanley Ramirez the Marlins are unloading again and we need a shortstop, give up Hayden Penn, Daniel Cabrera and Ramon Hernandez and maybe another mid level prospect, but Manny Ramirez is not what B-more needs.

Ramirez with his long hair and his agent, scott boras?? No Chance! Forget them.

jor from jersey - you forget Sammy Sosa too.

The Orioles seemed to be attracted to such clowns, if only for publicity sake.

This whole rumor is coming from John Heyman @ Sports Illustrated. And no matter how many times people have told him that there's no truth to it, he keeps bringing it up like a moron. He just shows how little journalistic credibility he has.

that rumor cant be true cause what purpose would it serve to bring him in here. we aren't going to be a playoff team next season so why pay him all that money. how old is manny anyway? he a beast but the orioles don't need him. spend that money on starting pitching. seriously.

For all of you who want to call Manny a clown, remember that he will go down with either the 2nd or 3rd (depending on A-rod) best statistics for a right hander in the history of baseball. Look it up. Manny would bring a lot of fans back to the ballpark without a doubt. Yall may love to hate him, but youd love to love him as well. Manny would likely even make enough money for the orioles to make the signing worthwhile. Look what happened in LA and how he singlehandedly sold out a stadium that always had empty seats. Manny does stupid things, but even when people thought he quit on the sox last year around july, he still hit well over .300 during the time in question. The guy is simply amazing. He helped turn david ortiz into a star simply with his presence in the lineup. The only player to have a hotter bat in the league than manny after he was traded was andre ethier, the dude that batted behind him. At 37, he can still hit and will for at least 2-3 more years.
But of course you don't sign him. The orioles were a serious offensive contender for much of last year and dont need another bat to win. There is no reason to break the bank on starting pitching either though. We arent 1-2 pitchers away from contending. we need 3-4 starters. Unless we can complement a few signings with legitimate pitching prospects, whats the point? We need 25 more wins than last year to even consider competing. That has to come from the whole rotation, not just your number 1 and 2 starters.

Peter,

I enjoy your column very much. Any chance you could put a bug in the Orioles ears about trying to pickup Ian Desmond (shortstop) from Nationals.? They just protected him from rule 5 (40 man roster addition). He could be a long term fix for them at short. They don't need to pickup somebody else's reject, like Greene. How about adding Wily Mo Pena in the conversation. He could add some right hand power. You take care.

Hanley Ramirez signed a 6 year contract with the Marlins. Why would they trade him?

Who's the wingnut that started this rumor? This deal could NEVER happen. Even if the Orioles had a few hundred million to spare, Angelos would never pay big money to bring in big talent. And who, in their right mind, would think that Manny would even consider coming to a terrible team like the Orioles?

I totally believe in this "trade rumor."

What will the O's have to trade to Boras in order to get Ramirez, since Manny doesn't currently have an employer?

Hanley Ramirez for Penn, Ramon and D-Cab?

Nice deal if you can get it!

We would probably have to give up two top-notch prospects in the Arietta/Tillman mode, and maybe someone like Huff as well.

The irony is that some version of this swap might be worth it. Hanley is probably the best shortstop in baseball. He can do it all and he's young.
