O's uniforms Day Three: They're a hit with the team

Jeff Zrebiec here filling in for The Schmucker who is stopping in some town in Europe today.

By now, most people are probably all-uniformed out. I know I am after writing stories about the uniform changes the past couple of days. Nobody asked for my opinion on the new jerseys, but I’ll briefly share it anyway. Overall, I liked the changes. I thought the road jerseys looked real sharp and the addition of orange in several spots – down the pants and on the sleeves - was a good decision. I also like the Maryland patch on the sleeves even though I overheard several complaints about it at yesterday’s fan rally. Was I overwhelmed by any of the changes? Nah. But I didn’t need – nor expect - to be.

Anyway, I’m sure you’re far more concerned with the opinion of the players on the new jerseys.

Manager Dave Trembley: "I think a lot of time and thought was put into this and I think they look very nice. It’s something that the fans want which is the most important thing and it’s kept alive a significant part of Orioles’ tradition."

Right fielder Nick Markakis: "I like them. They touched them up. It’s something different. It has Baltimore written across it so it’s something that is good for the fans and good for us."

Reliever George Sherrill: "We really don’t care what we wear one way or the other. But sure, if it is something that [fans] want, we’ll wear it with pride. We’ll back the city and whatever the fans want, it’s something that we want to give them. They’ve taken the steps to change the [uniforms] and here we are showing them off. It’s a good feeling to have this kind of support for something like this. If this is the kind of support we’re going to get for this, we’re looking forward to being good next year and bringing some fans out."

Reliever Dennis Sarfate: "To see Baltimore across your chest is special and it’s special to these fans. They haven’t seen it in a while. Hopefully we can put wins with the new uniform. I think we’d all rather win if we wear nothing. But this is a start in the right direction. I think it’s going to be a great thing next year."

How about you? What do you think of the new uniforms?

The new unis are good, but they still need some changes. Ditch the Os hat, bring back the cartoon bird face on the alternate hat. Have some white outlining the letters and numbers on the black jersey. Have the cartoon bird with the bat somewhere.

Now it's up to the FO to put winning type players in those uniforms. No more mediocre has-beens. No stop gaps, do it once, do it right.

I’m not a Baltimore native, married into it. I have been a fan of Cal since I was a kid so becoming an Orioles fan was easy. I have been living and dying (mostly dying lately) with this team. I always wondered why in such a history rich division where New York and Boston proudly proclaim their home on their road uniforms why Baltimore did not. I heard all sorts of Angelo rumors and reasons and maybe they made business sense, but none made baseball sense. I am glad to see this and will be out to purchase a new jersey soon. If they are in stores, possibly a Christmas gift! Thanks O’s for giving this team an identity!

It's about time !!!.........now about the pitching......

Can we read anything into the fact that B-Rob was not among the donners of the new threads? I'd like to resign one of the best leadoff hitters for 4-5 year deal, but maybe this is indication he won't be signing?

"B" is for B-Rob, not bye-bye.

I would have preferred the same black/orange/black treatment on the collar area, as well.

I would also prefer the old circular batting bird logo, with an updated look, on the sleeve instead of the MD patch.

I would also make the orange bp warm-up jerseys the alternate jersey, instead of the black ones.

Finally, I would replace the alternate black "O's" cap with the classic 1970 black/orange cartoon logo cap.

Overall, this is a great uniform upgrade, which is what you hope for with new unis.

2 points from this reader - I live in PA so I didn't give a hoot about Baltimore being on the jersey or not. Second, Peter A can be blamed for a lot of things but not for taking Baltimore off the jersey, that was done in 1973 b4 he was the owner. I believe the Hoffbergers still owned the team.

Lookin' Good !!! Team going in right direction on ALL FRONTS, Finally !!!

Is that 7:55 a.m. comment from the great Seaford Delaware Ballplayer, and if it is, what his he doing now a day's???

Hey, I like the new look. Maybe there's something to be said for a change; Tampa Bay got better when they changed their unis and name.
I'm sure there was an financial motive for the change also as there will likely be a surge in sales.
What I also liked where the comments by Sherrill and Sarfrate about being proud to wear the black and orange...nice to hear positive comments like that, despite the sour ending to '08. Hopefully, the pride factor wears off on the rest of the team!

Hey, I thought they were gonna include the winking Natty Boh face instead of the Oriole Bird. Now that is something to be proud of.

I would like to see the ANGRY Oriole Bird brought back. You know it use to hang outside Memorial Stadium. That would be really cool on the outside of the warehouse.

I too want that cartoon bird back, the one with the smile and the cap!

The O's need is bring back the cartoon bird on the hat and the team logo. They won three World Series titles with that bird. Even though they've updated the current bird, it still represents no World Series titles and 11 straight losing seasons. They should also bring back the classic "Orioles" and "Baltimore" script lettering from the 60's and 70's. The new "Baltimore" lettering on the road uniforms looks uneven.

Love the jerseys...still hate the hats!

Hey Pete.
I live all the way in Albuquerque and i need to find a way to get my authentic Markakis away jersey. MLB.com only has blank jerseys right now. Any idea when personalized jerseys and jerseys with players names on them will be available?

The unis look good, but I still would have liked to see the old smiling bird (he won three world series) as the alternate hat and an orange alternate jersey. I miss those from when I was a kid.

Shame on George Sherrill. How DARE he say, "We don't care what we wear one way or another".. Not only did he NOT return a fan mail I sent him, but he is so priveleged to be in the Majors after spending numerous seasons in the independent leagues. He should be so proud to have a Major league uniform on; I am very disappointed in his lack of enthusiasm; go back to Sioux Falls..!

The Peter Angelos just doesn't get it.
Other teams like the A's (even the Braves) are making trades to better themselves and the O's are throwing a rally for stupid uniforms? If you want to win back the fans? Bring some talent to this last place team!

Not to object to the idea of winning, but I disagree with Dennis Sarfate - I'd rather see a band of losers in ugly uniforms than bare-naked winners taking the field in April. That being said, winners in good uniforms would be my first preference. Here's hoping that pride in the uniform translates to hard work on the field.

Nice to see Palmer and Boog, but where was Brooks? Once again, another opportunity wasted. Why can't the O's front office figure out some way to include him?

Brought to you by the letter "b" (for Brooks) Coincidence? I think not.

i think the unis are great looking. thank you orioles for taking these steps. the biggest change is bmore on the chest but the second biggest improvement is the new bird on the hat. GREAT looking bird. much more balanced on the hat.

can't wait to see the team sporting the away jerseys in yankee stadium and fenway.

now let's play ball!

Hooray for uniforms, Hooray for Angelos, Hooray for more losing seasons. Let's forget about rebuilding now, and sign Mark Texieria and A.J. Burnett. They won't turn out to be anything like Miguel Tejada, Glenn Davis, Albert Belle, or Will Clark.

Put top notch players in those uniforms like home-grown Mark Texiera, and you'll put fans in the seats at Camden Yards. The Orioles have not had a winning season since before my 10 year old son was born.
By the time I was his age, I had been to a World Series game twice - 66' & 69. Let Texiera be the Frank Robinson of my boy's youth. It's time to rebuild the winning ways of the Orioles. Let it be this year.

I haven't yet seen a complete head-to-toe picture of all of the variations, but I mostly like the changes. It's good they're trying to make everything "look uniform" - meaning not just what they wear but all of the logos, too.

My only dislike right now is that 'Orioles' script on the one sleeve on the road (having a scripted word on a sleeve looks weird!), but maybe it won't seem anything major once we're watching them in motion.

Speaking of being in motion, it's good the cap bird will be a little "less stationary". That was the one thing that bothered me about it back in 1989 (kinda like how the Buffalo Bills 'charging buffalo' makes a lot more sense on a helmet than the pre-1973 one that was standing still).

I like the Maryland sleeve patch. Perhaps to counter the 'Baltimore' name being front and center, it's the way to keep places like Frederick and Hagerstown from shifting allegiance to the Nationals. On the other hand, I hope no anti-Oriole fan in Southern PA. uses that as further reason that folks up there should only root for the Phillies or Pirates. It may not be the most populated area in the World, but the O's need the York-Hanover-Gettysburg market to continue to be in their corner (especially with DC now theoretically gone).

Why not bring back those 1971 tangerine-colored jerseys and make them the official alternate ones, instead of those dreary black ones?

Or better yet, bring back the 1969 sleeveless jerseys, they were awesome!

Nothing sells like nostalgia...$$$$$$$

A better way to go would have been to just go back the uniforms they had last time Baltimore was on the road jerseys. They looked good, they were timeless, and they were distinctively Orioles, not generic. The new patches are silly, not well thought out, and I can't imagine that they'll still be on the jersey's in 10 years. The Orioles should be looking for a uniforms that will be here to stay and that everyone will identify with the Orioles just from the style. The old late 60's uniforms do that, the new ones don't.

MacPhail doesn't really want to resign Roberts, at least not at a fair market price. It's too bad so many naive fans will blame Brian when he ends up getting traded after never receiving any legitimate extension offer from the Orioles.

I'm a graphic designer so uniforms interest me in general. These were a nice tweak with one big change--the scripted Baltimore. At first, from afar, I thought the "Baltimore" was a bit thin toward the "more". But as I've seen it in pictures, I do like it. And I am a proud resident of this city.

I think we have one of the nicer state flags so it's nice to see it on the uniforms. My ONLY real gripe is that the type on the state flag patch is a bit horsey. Yes, I'm really nit picking.

Cheers to the Orioles for the refresh.

Daniel. I disagree with your inclusion of Tejada with the unproductive free agent signings. Take a look at his stats before making such a statement; he had 150 RBI his first season, and then avg 100 RBI for the other years. Miggy has declined since but he gave us great numbers...
In the remote chance that Tex comes here, it's no lock that he will put up similar numbers, at likely twice the cost..

I love the new patch, but I would like to see the orange sox with the home whites. And yes the white lettering outside the orange of the black jerseys. And about a real orange jersey instead of using the BP home jerseys for some games.

Thanks to the front office for finally showing some pride in the history of the team and its city. Now, please lose the "zero" caps and replace it with the bird of our youth (60s-70s).
