Orioles: The braintrust

News this week that Andy MacPhail has hired former Reds GM Wayne Krivsky as a special assistant probably didn't register very high on the fan excitement meter, but it is just another example of the way Andy does business.

He's a stickler for getting every ounce of information he can get before making a decision, which can be frustrating for fans who want to see dynamic action this offseason. The addition of Krivsky, with 27 years in the business and experience in both leagues, gives the Orioles front office a much broader perspective as MacPhail moves into what looks like another transitional year in his rebuilding plan.

Somebody wrote in to ask how that affects Mike Flanagan, and it's a fair question. I don't think it affects him much at all. I believe Andy looks to Mike for help evaluating the organization's pitching depth, which probably won't change. Mike remains a favorite of Peter Angelos, so I think he's probably safe in his current position.

Mike is part of the good ol' boy network, he's not going anywhere. There is no accountability if your in w/ Angelos

Pete,

Quite the contrary, Andy actually moved out swiftly, two weeks to replace a loss. If only he moved that fast on player personnel. As far as Flanagan goes, his contract expires at the end of the year and its about three years too late. Can you say Baez, Walker and Bradford to the tune of $40 Million, thats Tex a SS and one starting pitcher. Through in Gibbons and what do we have to show, lost millions for nothing, a terrible pitching coach, an even worse GM and a horrible announcer. I'm all for loyalty but let him go help the Red Sox the way he's helped us since he quit tossin it arround!

MacPhail looks to Flanagan for evaluating organizational pitching.... You've got to be kidding, RIGHT ? The only reason he's around is because he holds down the # 1 suck-up slot to Angelos. Package him along with Walker for a PTBN(much)L and be done with it.

And...what exactly IS Flanagan's current position?

I know the Orioles' website still lists him as EVP of Baseball Ops, but does that mean he's still our de jure GM even if MacPhail is our de facto GM?

How exactly is this working?

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No, Andy really acts as the GM and Mike is one of his several advisors.

well the GMs are idiots if they really are refusing to trae Olson for Kalil Green. that makes me shake my head, sick to my stomach in disgust. its things like this that make make me feel id be better off to denounce the Os after over 30 years of fandome, and just give up on them knowing because of ineptitude they will never return to respectability. Olson will never be anything in the AL east, maybe so in the NL at Petco park, but Greene is one of the 5 best SS in the game and yet we will trade Olson for PIe? who the heck is Pie? a zero, probably another never will be whos minor league numbers show me nothing plus we dont need a left handed outfielder. if he batter right and Greene was a part of the deal then maybe id consider.

Orioles: The braintrust = Butt Head

Both oxymorons

So, "THEGR8ESTOFALLTYME" thinks Kalil Greene is one of the "5 best SS in the game" and he's calling Andy an idiot? Greene played 105 games, hitting a robust .213 with 10 HR's, 35 RBI and 100 SO's in only 389 AB's! But don't worry, because he also brings no speed or defensive range too! There are easily a dozen better SS's in the game. I like what our GM has done and look forward to his next, measured and intelligent decision.

I agree that Olson may never materialize in the AL East. But why are you acting like MacPhail turned down such a great trade? Khalil Greene performed horribly last year, which includes his splits, he has an expensive contract, and he is one year from free agency. If you don't consider those pretty d*mn good reasons to turn down such a trade, then you must be, in secret, a Padres fan.

And since it's all speculation, I'd be happy if it was later confirmed that MacP was smart enough to turn down this trade. Greene should be had for less than a young, cheap pitcher with upside.

Why, after all of these years, do people still bring up Jon Miller. I loved Millers anouncing as much as anyone, buts it's old news and it has nothing to do with wins and losses.

Vince,
In regards to why bring up Jon Miller after all these years? Because baseball lends itself so well to radio and Jon was and is simply the best. Joe Angel is pretty good.....but Jim Hunter is the reason so many regret losing Jon Miller.....nice guy and all, but a torturous excercize to listen call a baseball game...

What has krivsky done of significance in MLB? What is his "talent"? I have an Idea of the jobs he has done but not so much the significance, thereof.

Folks,

Saying Olsen is young and has an upside is only partially correct, he's young. The guy struggled with lefties, he's not overpowering and he like most of our other pitchers walk to d*mn many hitters. Defensive players don't like standing around for 3-0 counts or going 3-2 to half of the American league. I have absolutely no problem dumping Olsen, what I have a problem with is taking more trash like Pie (when we don't need another aging OF prospect) when OF's are cheap and plentiful and we have Scott and 2 better prospect ourselves. Andy needs to focus on improving the O's and not the Cubs and sign a big bat, good fielding SS and two inning eaters.

Hey, I think Mike Flanagan deserves a lot of credit for being a team player when McPhail was hired. He also deserves some credit for what he did accomplish. Under his watch, we acquired Markakis, Ray, Guthrie, kept Roberts instead of Hairston, which wasn't popular at the time, drafted Wieters and Arrieta; we also went hard after free agents and it's not his fault they wouldn't take our money. I mean, if just a couple free agents had come here and Loewen and Penn would have worked out, we might have been a force the last few years. Things didn't work out but he made some quality decisions and deserves some credit for that.

How many guys do you need of the front office? I can see the GM and maybe an assistant or two but it seems like the O's have so many people in the warehouse that they must be running out of parking spaces.

Mark Lesly -

Amen to the Kalil Greene trade talk. And of course some posters on this website are advance scouts and just know Olson will never pan out. Maybe he will, and maybe he won't. But if I did have to choose between trading Olson for Greene or Pie, I'd take Pie every time. We've already seen an extent of Greene's game. Pie's game is still in the infancy stages. And most scouts still love the guy!

But all in all, I'd be happy to keep Olson too! We have not seen this kid's best. And i for one am happy with the way MacPhail goes about business. A team as bad as the O's can not afford to just jump at the first taker just for the sake of making quick moves. We have such few pieces to trade.

People,
The orioles have so many needs that we cannot simply jump up at every offer. Is Greene better than any shortstop we have in our organization? Probably, but thats not saying very much at all... the real question is, is he going to be worth very much in the end? Probably not and so I do not see a point in trading away a valuable pitching commodity such as Olsen (HAHAHA sorry can't keep a straight face saying that) But really the biggest problem the O's have is starting pitching and I do not see a point in trading away YOUNG starting pitchers, even if they have struggled. It makes no sense, we have no depth there so why trade away the little depth we have?

In respect to Pie.... I am not high on the kid, and really do not see a point in bringing him in. I mean I guess it will allow us to finally let Kevin Millar go, and I know he is a leader but the man just isn't very good anymore. Pie is a poor mans Adam Jones and to think that both Adam and Pie will pan out to their full potential is asking a lot. Don't make that trade and look into better options...

Willl the Editors/Staff directory of the SUN ever identify which individuals qualify for the HIGH GRADE staff position. Probably, John Steadman would be the ONLY candidate!

Pete,

I too think Andy is doing a great job, however to use Orioles and Braintrust in the same sentence is oxymoronic (Flannagan and Angelos). However, dating back to the Syd Trift statement about confederate money and our annual effort to sign minor league free agents it brings me back to when Steve Spurrier was the Redskins coach and the Ole Ball Coach was asked why he was signing a different former Gator WR every other week. His reply much like the O's free agent philosphy, their cheap and available.
