What a night in Cleveland...

elimanning2getty.jpg...and how often does anybody get to say that. The Browns absolutely humbled the defending world champion New York Giants, 35-14, in an upset victory that probably took a little of the sting out of the disappointing upset losses suffered by the NFC East rival Redskins and Cowboys on Sunday.

The Cleveland secondary picked off Eli Manning (left) three times and made him look a lot like the suddenly embattled rookie quarterback whose three picks on Sunday brought down the wrath of a significant chunk of Ravens Nation.

Let's go to the stats: Joe Flacco completed 28 for 38 passes for 241 yards against an Indianapolis Colts team that is -- despite a sluggish start -- considered a Super Bowl contender. Manning completed 18 of 28 passes for 196 yards against a team that was beaten soundly by the Ravens four weeks ago.

This is not to imply that Flacco played all right on Sunday. He didn't. He looked overmatched for the first time this season. It is, however, important to realize that anyone can have a day like that on the road against an inspired opponent. That's why the scattered calls to replace Flacco with Troy Smith are somewhat premature.

In other words, lay off the kid for a couple more weeks and see how he does against the Dolphins and the Raiders. I'm pretty sure we'll all be back on the Flacco bandwagon before you know it.

By name Flacco as the starter for the rest of the season. Flacco needs help. Why didn't they acquire Simms as QB when they had a chance? Flacco could have learned alot from him. This team is turning out to be a huge flop this year. Noone can tackle. Noone knows when not to try and return the ball. I can no-longer watch a whole game. I just a waste of time. The owner would have made a better decision by hiring Marty than John has coach. Marty could at least get you to the playoffs in a couple of years. You are seeing now what John is capable of. He wasn't even a coordinator for Christ sake!!!!

I hope you're right about getting back on the bandwagon. I never got of it because you can tell Flacco is a real NFL talent but his receivers, save Mason, aren't. (Don't mention Heap...who knows what's wrong with him.)

I'd love to see what Flacco could do with a real NFL receiver corps. But based on the Raven's past history bringing in that talent, I don't know if we'll ever find out.

I agree the calls to replace Flacco are premature, because the loss can't be put on him. He was trying to play catchup, (something the Ravens O has never been built for) because the Ravens D blitzes on nearly every snap. While the Colts' front 4 can get to the QB, when the Ravens sent 7 they couldn't get to Manning. The big Colts' plays happened when the Ravens showed they were blitzing (how about disguising the blitz when you know Manning audibles everytime?) and that the receivers would be matched up man-to-man.

Even the best CBs (e.g. Champ Bailey) can get beat when in single coverage, so why would we leave our fourth string CB to cover Reggie Wayne with no safety help?

The same thing happened in the end of the Steelers game. The Ravens inexplicably showed they were sending 3 guys up the A gap, which would let any high school QB know that the middle of the field would be open for the RB leaking out or running the hot route.

So while Flacco has the tools to be a long time Franchise QB, Troy Smith has the athletic tools to be a playmaker right now... Especially now when because of injuries, the OL can't block anyone.

Pete,

I will say this again...Ravens need to hire a veteran QB. We basically have two inexperienced QB's to choose from. What sucess are we really going to have with either of them this season? Why just test the new QB and let him get plastered on the turf? I think this is another good way to ruin a potentially good QB...don't you think? People need to stop comparing the pick of Flacco to Big Ben. When we spend some picks and make some trades to get some good O-line players and some runningbacks that are big and physical, then lets talk about the future of Joe Flacco. I will never be on a QB bandwagon in his first year. Flacco may get a win on the Raiders, but that is wishful thinking Pete. Remeber...didn't the Ravens LOSE to the 'winless' Dolphins not too long ago? The only thing that will save Flacco and this bad offense is if the running game miraculously starts to work. Hope you prove me wrong Pete, but I would say he will probably end up getting hurt soon if he does not learn a little faster. Then we will be forced to watch a Heisman winner play...what a bummer. ;-P

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
