The AFL is under way
For those Orioles fans who are already going through withdrawal, the Arizona Fall League opened yesterday, and Matt Wieters had a triple and a walk in four plate appearances in his first start behind the plate. Nolan Reimold (0-for-2) and Wieters batted third and fourth for the Surprise Rafters in a 10-3 loss to the Peo Javelinas.
Bowie reliever Chad Thall struggled through one inning in relief of Rangers pitcher Willie Eyre, giving up three runs on seven hits. Yankees prospect Phil Hughes pitched five innings and gave up one hit for the Javelinas.
Top 2008 Orioles draft choice Brian Matusz (right) will be making his professional debut soon in the area where he grew up, and talked about that in an article on the Baseball America Web site that you can read right here.

I'm an avid sports radio listener but I could not find any of the playoffs on the radio. What gives?

Pete's reply: I guess the Division Series was a hard sell because it wasn't on any of the adequate local stations. I was able to pick a couple of games up on out-of-area stations, but it was very hard to make out what was going on. Hopefullly, the LCS broadcasts will be carried locally.

Boy, how exciting to have more dribble from the clueless body with the most fitting SURNAME.

Pete's reply: Welcome back. I've missed your clever sense of humor. I believe that's the millionth time I've heard that lame name crap. Come pick up your prize.

Leave Peter alone, John. His wife does.
In all seriousness, it will be nice to see what Reimold can do in the AFL with Wieters hitting behind him. That could be a combo that we see at Camden in 2009.

Hey Pete what did you do to piss off the guy who has a name right out of the new testament?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don't know. Maybe he doesn't like Hawaiian shirts.

Pete, any word on Danys Baez? I know he was atrocious back in 2007 (I saw firsthand him lose several games in Seattle), but if he was injured during 2007 but healthy in 2009, there might be a chance of him giving the pen more depth. He is still under contract for 2009, correct? Thanks, and good work on the blog.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: They expect Baez back this spring. He'll probably be on a short leash, however.

It's going to be fun keeping tabs on these guys, especially Brian Matusz, since he hasn't pitched in any professional games before. Wieters just keeps hitting, doesn't he?
johnjames44 -- For the record, the word you apparently meant to use in your poison post wasn't "dribble," it was "drivel." Here, look it up...

Pete's reply: I don't know. Maybe he's seen me after five beers.

Pete, you've forgotten about us here in Hawaii and the HWB. I've been out to see the CaneFires a few times. Tyler Henson has been playing 3rd and short. Off to a slow start, especially in the field, he's come around. Leading the team hitting .370 with a league leading 6 doubles. SLG .667
Not too bad.
Wally Crancer has been moved between catcher and 1st. base. They don't seem to know what to do with him. Playing in only 4 games so far, he has foundered.
Tim Bascomb got lit up in his appearances. 3.1 innings so far with 7 ER, an ERA above 18.
Cliff Flagello, the BIG right hander has been great so far. I watched a few innings of his second relief appearance from behind the plate and man does he have movement on his pitches. He's gone 3 innings allowing 1 walk, 4 strike outs and no earned runs. The stadium gun said he was only throwing 86-89 mph, but like most things in the islands, it probably wasn't working right.
These guys are 5-2 and playing well. We might not have the big names here but with the easy access to the players and their enthusiasm, it's a blast watching them.

Pete's reply: I haven't forgotten about them. I'll be keeping tabs, but feel free to send an update, too. Good info.

I get all playoff games loud and clear on my XM. I live in Connecticut so I can't say a station but they have the ESPN national broadcast as one option so I assume that ESPN stations should carry them. As of this week for 16.95 a month (less if you sign up for a year or more at once) I get all MLB games home team broadcasts and all NFL games (no blackouts on XM). For a native Baltimorian in CT I can get all O's games and Ravens games now. Since it's portable I can take it anywhere in US and get them too. If you are a Howard Stern fan that is now included on XM with the Best of Sirius package.
P.S. I do not work for XM - just a happy customer.

Chad Thall is one cool name. How long does it take for him to warm up?

Pete - Are all of the Oriole coaches coming back next year? Has that info been made public yet or are they deciding that at the organizational meetings?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm pretty sure everybody is coming back.

Thanks for the info, turns out they play in Suprise Az . I cant really justify a 2 hour ride at the moment. I already go to a local casino and watch the Ravens games. It does look interesting , a chance to go out and see the pitcher they just drafted and Weiters. Its kind of looking like you and everone in Baltimore will be seeing alot of Weiters next year. Peace

Pete's reply: Didn't know it was that far out. Might be worth it to see Matusz, who will debut soon.

Pete -- do you know the correct pronunciation of Brian Matusz' last name? I haven't seen that anywhere. Thanks.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Yes, it is pronounced Matt-us, with the emphasis on the first syllable.
