Stop dreaming

So much for everybody's dream World Series matchup. Barring a dual playoff outcome that stretches the limits of probability, Manny Ramirez will not be returning to Fenway Park to thumb his nose at the Red Sox and Joe Torre will not enjoy the ultimate October vindication after being run out of town by the Yankees.

The Dodgers are down three games to one in the NLCS and the Red Sox are getting bullied by the upstart Tampa Bay Rays, who pushed them to the brink of elimination with a resounding 13-4 victory last night at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have a recent history of rebounding in such situations, but the odds against both teams winning three straight are astronomical.

Well, it wasn't everybody's dream anyway. The last-to-first rise of the Rays should be the most compelling and inspiring story, and -- the way they are playing right now -- it might have to be.

I am now a Rays fan until the Orioles start playing in August & September like they did in April, May & June. In 3 of the past 5 years, the Orioles would have a .500 record if they played consistent all 162 games.

I know that does not get us to the playoffs, but unless some GM out there is dumb enough to deal with Andy M and he gets away with grand larceny the way he did with Houston & Seatle last year, I will take a .500 season.

It definitely wasn't my dream. Mine generally involve Reese Witherspoon, a tub of Strawberry Cool Whip (extra creamy), and a set of jumper cables.

And good luck with your roast, Pete. Remember--they're not laughing with you, they're laughing at you.

Hopefully that will come to pass.... Not taking anything away from the Rays or Phillies for that matter but more importantly at least to me, it will throw Fox and ESPN under the bus for their incessant Red Sox/Dodger rhetoric. That will be the true icing on the cake.

The Rays should be an example of what a team does to build itself to dominance - especially in the East, where there is plenty of great ball clubs (not counting the O's or Jay's). Unfortunately, there is no winning season in sight that I can see with the O's. The farm still seems to be struggling, and prospects all seem to turn to dud's. I love that all the talk about the Dodgers and the RedSox that the talking heads seem to wish would happen has no way of happening this year. The RedSox are done. The Dodgers are on the way out as well. I love it! Sorry, AL fans...but I refuse to root for a AL East team other than the sucky O's. Go Phillies. Hey...maybe if we kept Gillick, we could have a winning team like he has? Just rambling...

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
