Sarah Palin on ice
Self-described "Hockey Mom" and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin will drop the ceremonial first puck when the Philadelphia Flyers open the NHL season on Saturday against the New York Rangers.
Here's the Associated Press story from Philly.com, in which Flyers owner and John McCain supporter Ed Snider tries to explain why this isn't just a partisan political photo opportunity.
Can't imagine it's sitting well with Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden, who is the U.S. Senator from Delaware but spent the vice presidential debate talking so much about his roots in the election battleground state of Pennsylvania that I started to wonder if (as Roger Clemens put it) I mis-remembered his state affiliation.
Don't know how this will play from a political standpoint, but it isn't playing well on Philly.com, where a reader feedback poll is running 62 percent against the idea.

Is should be noted that Comcast owns the Flyers, and the CEO of Comcast is one of the biggest donors to the Republican Party in the country. They have invested very heavily in the McCain campaign, which makes this one big in-kind campaign donation. The frustrating thing is that Comcast has one of the worst records in the country on labor rights and have cut hundreds of Pennsylvania workers from receiving full benefits. So it's a stunt that will make Palin look good and maybe people will vote for her without knowing what it could mean for them! Boo.

Looks like this isn't going over well in the Cradle of Freedom.

Let Palin enjoy her 15 minutes of fame. Yes I realize that her running for Vice-President is a serious matter and I fear the thought of her actually being elected to that position, but I see the next few weeks as her big audition and call-back. She is cute and articulate and can certainly read a tele-prompter. I think that some people in this country are infatuated with her personality ... like their infatuation with an entertainer or an athlete. I sincerely hope that very few in the country seriously see her as holding the second highest office in the land. Perhaps they see her as I do, as a possible TV personality. One who could be a political commentator on Fox or could be a fill-in replacement for Hasslebeck on "the View". Now that would make good TV ... Ooooo such excitement.

Pete's reply: Infatuated with her personality? Isn't that what it's all about in this new Obama nation?

Shes such a maverick...look at her all mavericky. I hope she shows her maverickness when she drops the puck on center ice. Do you think the maverick pitbull will where lipstick? In conclusion, I just want to say...............................................................................Maverick!!
Thank you Tina Fey!!

As a Pennsylvanian, I am proud to have Ms. Palin drop a puck in our fine Commonwealth. We don't have any moose for her to shoot, but she might be able to bag a donkey or two while she's here.

Pete,
Didn't see you as a Republican... being from Cali and then moving to Bmore.
Very disappointing man.
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: When I grew up, California was the most solid Republican state. Sorry, but I believe the system works best when there are sincere, earnest people with good ideas on both sides of the aisle.

Chris Joseph--Regarding Moose, you better keep Palin away from Montoursville.

Good fer you Peter. As an intelligent, thinking man there's no way you could be a Liberal. That said, I believe it's a mistake to reveal your political leaning as a sports guy. Sports is a refuge from all that. When you take one side or the other you're going to make about 50% of your audience mad.

If you're under twenty-one and aren't a Democrat, you don't have a heart. If you're over thirty and aren't a Republican, you don't have a brain.

Good one, Barry! I forgot about that PA Moose up north.

Uh, nice try Schmuck. I grew up in SoCal and unless you're referring to the denizens that live "behind the Orange Curtain" (OC) California has never, repeat, NEVER been a "most solid Republican state" even when Reagan was the governor. You can peddle that crappola to the Baltimorons but westcoast homeboys know better. And get ready for that gibbering moronette Palin to get booed into next week by the Philly faithful, as well she should.
In closing, my advice to you is to keep politics off the sports page unless you feel like losing the few readers you have.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: So mentioning that Palin is dropping the puck at a Flyers game isn't sports-related...and is too political? I think if you go back and look at that entry, you'll see it's completely neutral. I even quote the negative poll about it. But I see you're a very objective observer by your comments about her. Classy.

hey peter, instead of being sarcastic by calling him "classy", why didn't you respond to JoeG's assertions that california has never been a republican state? you only read the last sentence of the post?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I probably overstated that, but for most of my life there, it was a largely Republican state. He's probably right, however, that my perception was colored by growing up in Orange County, which was one of the most Republican places on earth when I was growing up.

Wow - with all the "non partisan" appearances Obama has gotten on late night shows, Oprah, etc., and you pick on this one?
Who made you a political pundit anyway?
Stay on sports Pete - that is if you want any continued readership from me.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't know what you're talking about. I wrote about an NHL first puck ceremony. Again, if that's the level that will offend you enough to stop reading this blog, go now because I'm not going to tiptoe around you. I already said that I don't intend to start any political discussions, but if I want to make fun of Palin or Obama and the mood strikes, I'm probably going to do it. I find it sad that anyone is so partisan they can't laugh at politics. I watched SNL spoof Palin and Biden. Did you get mad at the jokes about the guy or gal you liked? I thought the thing was hilarious on both sides. Lighten up.
