Ravens: Crystal ball time

My prediction for today's showdown between the Ravens and the Colts is already in print, and it isn't a happy one. I fear the Colts will prevail by a score of 24-16, but the oddsmakers say the game will be closer. The last time I looked, the Ravens were only a 3 1/2-point underdog.

If it's any consolation, the line moved slightly toward the Ravens this weekend, probably when it became official that Colts safety Bob Sanders would be out for the third straight week following arthroscopic knee surgery, though that was no great surprise.

For the Ravens to win, they have to exploit the Colts' mediocre defense against the run and keep Peyton Manning from having his way all day. The Colts merely have to reconstitute their offensive chemistry and put 20 points on the scoreboard against a Ravens secondary that again is decimated by injuries. That simple.

Big question: Can the Ravens maintain their defensive intensity after the team came up three points short in back-to-back bruising games against the Steelers and Titans?

My head says the Ravens should win this game because of the run offense, run defense match up. But my heart tells me the Ravens will find yet another way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Peter,

Just a quick confirming note on your column from 10/8 about the start of the Ravens season and the ups ... then downs.

You cited the same two things that have been on mind for 2 weeks. I like what John Harbaugh has done with the team, but I cannot give him a pass for the two inexcusable mistakes in Games 3 and 4 ... the failure to challenge the no-touchdown call and the clock management at the end of the half vs Tennessee.

This was supposed to be a coaching staff that understood the riskd/rewards of challenging plays ... if I saw it on the replay that Monday night, why didn't the coach assigned to that job see it and insist that Harbaugh challenge. This was a touchdown ... there is no higher reward risk than that.

Then the clock management was putrid ... and then on top of wasting all of that time and wasting a timeout, the play that ensued was a dismal failure. I'll even criticize Flacco for that ... he should have either immediately called a timeout or run up and spiked the ball.

It;s great that the defense is rated so highly, but we've seen it time and again .... Colts playoff game, we can't stop important 3rd downs ... Patriots game, we can stop them from going 80 yards ... and finally Tennessee, we let them make two long drives and throw in a stupid penalty to boot!

I'm not sure what has changed!

petter i think there are a lot of if 's in todays game. if the ravens don't make personal foul penalties,if mat stover does not mis any pat's or field goals,if the offensive line can protect flacko. and as you mentioned cntaining peyton maning. then they just might win.1

Pete,

Thanks for this. I now know the Ravens will win today. I predict 20 to 13 and one turnover for a score for the Ravens. Also 165 yards rushing and a TD on a long run by McGahee.

somebody please tell Chris McAlister to wake up, the game has started.

Appears that Cameron has been studying the Billick play book. He stinks just as bad as Billick. I see no other victories for this garbage junior high team. Another year of pro sports misery in Baltimore.

Corey Ivy cannot cover Reggie Wayne. Period. And if you line up for bump coverage at the line and then tap him on the shoulder while letting him get to full speed it's a gimme touchdown. Damn it. Why do we always find a way to screw up against the #&$^^%&%* Colts of all teams?

Cory Ivy couldn't cover a bed if he was a blanket. Love his passion, hate his game.

I can't wait to hear what the excusses will be for Flacco now! This guy should be on the bench the best QB is not Flacco, its Smith. Time will tell that!
