Who wrote this script?

Joe Flacco just ran for a 38-yard touchdown on a bootleg to put the Ravens up by two touchdowns with the third quarter about to expire.

No matter what happens the rest of the way, Flacco's NFL regular season debut is already a huge success. The Ravens would have been happy for him just to keep his hands wrapped around the ball and let the defense do most of the work.

Flacco stat update: Young Joe is 13 for 26 for 108 yards. With a little luck, he would be 16 of 26 for maybe 150 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Ray Rice also is having a pretty good all-around day, with 58 yards rushing and three receptions for 19 yards.

Quirky stat: The run by Flacco was the longest of his post-high school career. His longest run at the University of Delaware was 25 yards against James Madison last year, and it was not for a touchdown.

What is the longest run for a TD by a Ravens' QB ?

Pete's reply: You just saw it.

Well he seems to throw with good accuracy. Can he pitch?

Ravens have more wins in September this year then the O's. They only allowed the other team to score 3. Also better then the O's. I also think the Ravens have almost as many wins on Sunday as the O's.

Yeah I think Baltimore will be moving on from the O's now. 6 months after everyone else did.

38 (yds) huh, is that more than the # of walks the O's gave up today ?

Hallelujah! Finally a real football game with a real football game look. No more Billick Rage scrums followed by an occassional long pass, long run, or interception return followed by a 47 yard field goal.

Joe has made a believer out of me, and if you check the blog archive, I was definitely not convinced. Now I'm close. I realize this was Cincy and not Dallas, but Joe has come light years in the past 3 weeks.

If he keeps this up, we'll have to raise his uniform number about 14 numbers higher, if you catch my drift. You know, unknown kid from working-class roots, rejected by Pittsburgh (Univ., in this case, not the Steelers). Attends smaller college program to assure playing time. In other words, Charm City hasn't had a real QB to cheer about (except Bert Jones) since You-Know-U. Hmm.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
