What if Ravens had signed Favre?

Favre.jpgIt seems like a long time ago that I got into that heated argument with Steve Davis on his WBAL radio show about Brett Favre and whether the Ravens should make a play for him to solidify the quarterback situation. Davis, probably playing the devil's advocate, made the point that the Ravens might be able to squeeze a couple additional victories out of the 2008 season with a future Hall of Famer at QB ... perhaps even turning the team into a borderline playoff contender.

Of course, it didn't take much to win that argument. The Ravens had already turned the page on their rent-a-quarterback days and were committed to developing Joe Flacco and Troy Smith as their quarterback combo of the future. Bringing Favre into the picture would have forced Cam Cameron to scrap months of work designing the offense and created nothing but uncertainty moving forward.

Nevertheless, there were plenty of callers and e-mailers on Steve's side. Brett is a very popular guy and he certainly would have been a dynamic addition to the Ravens' offense, but it's pretty obvious now that the Ravens did the right thing by staying on the sidelines.

favresacked.jpgIf you watched last night's game between the Jets and the San Diego Chargers, you saw Brett at both his best and worst. He made some real big plays and he made some real bad ones as the Jets got torched at Qualcomm Stadium. I'm not a mind-reader, but whenever the MNF cameras caught Jets coach Eric Mangini on the sidelines, he looked like he was wondering how he got into this mess.

It was bad enough that during the Westwood One halftime show, commentator Jim Gray told former NFL quarterback Phil Sims that he felt "sad" watching Favre struggle to replicate his past glory.

The Ravens, meanwhile, are pretty happy with the way things are developing. Nobody is anointing Joe Flacco as the next great NFL quarterback, but he has made a good account of himself and settled into the starting role. He's probably going to get knocked around a little on Monday night in Pittsburgh, but that's part of the process that could turn him into something special.

Would the Ravens be 2-0 with Favre at quarterback? Maybe. But the fact that they are 2-0 with Flacco is proof that they made the right decision by sticking with him when Kyle Boller went down with an injury and Smith got sick. I was right, too, but I'll keep that to myself the next time I'm on with Davis Thursday night. He's got to be pretty tired of losing arguments to me by now.

No Favre. The Ravens have enough "selfish" players.

Yes, the Ravens are 2-0, no doubt above expectations. However, I would harbor any playoff talk until you actually play a team that has won a game this year. Beat the Steelers convincingly and then you have a argument.

While the Ravens can't be better off than 2-0 after two games played, let's not forget they are 2-0 against teams who are a combined 0-6.

Still, the Ravens didn't draft Flacco (or Smith or Boller for that matter) just to set up the scenario of having to decide when is the right time to tell a future HOFer he has to sit now.

One thing is for certain in my mind ... Brett Favre would have been better off in Baltimore than with that New Jersey team.

At the same time while it is possible Favre would have racked up a better 16-game record in purple than whatever actually lies ahead, the Ravens made the right decision.

(A veteran back-up wouldn't be a bad option for 2009, though. Chris Redman, maybe?)

if they had signed him, the team concept they have now would be out the widow, he is a selfish gun slinger that is passed his prime. he is blaming everybody on the jets instead of looking in the mirror for the early failing, recievers are not running correct routes, play calling is not allowing him to do his thing please , he is single hitter now with a interception waiting to happen. if we had culpepper running the show I personally think we would have made the super bowl

Farve looked horrible last night. The Ravens did the right thing by not trying to sign Brett. His days of being great are past. But Flacco's days of being a premier QB are coming soon and will be here for years to come.

No one could have foreseen the way the QB situation played out with Boller going down for the season and Smith's freakish throat infection. In hind sight, having Favre might have been a good thing. Your'e right about Flaco not setting the world on fire. I'm sure the real game experience has been invaluable and he has certainly shown poise and a capacity for growth but the wisdom of giving him a veteran to learn behind and not rushing him was also sound. The Ravens 2 - 0 start has more to do with the defense and the maturation of the O-Line than with Flaco. Winning is an elixer that cures a lot of ills. It certainly makes the growing pains easier. I'd still rather have Favre going into Pittsburgh on Monday night with Flaco watching and learning. Having said that, of course I wish the kid nothing but the best.

Favre is not the reason that team is struggling or why they struggled last night. He's not comfortable with the playbook, that's obvious, but the playcalling has been horendous. They haven't thrown in the redzone with the greatest redzone passer of all time (65% of his TD's have come from the redzone) and last night, with 3 attempts to get a 2-point ocnversion from inside the one-yard-line, they called a 5-wide-out pass play, all of them with slant routes inside a 10 yard area. You can't pull of a slant with that many defenders in the area, I'm 20 and I know that much.

Favre is doing the best with what he's got. He has made his mistakes but the playcalling has been horrible in New York, and the defense just as bad.

As for the Ravens, I'm happy with Flacco, but let's not rip on Favre because his team is horrendous.

The title is a little incorrect since they would have had to have traded for Brett Favre, not signed him. Probably nitpicking but hey, isn't that what commentors are supposed to do?

no farve here either. he should have stayed retired and not spoil his record.with flaco we have some offense to go along with the great defense of the ravens.yes flaco will make mistakes, the welll seasoned quarter backs do too. i hope flaco stays healthy and is qb of the future.

Comparing Flacco to Favre is like comparing a Kia to a Porsche. The Ravens would be much better off with Favre at QB. Favre threw for more yards in last night's game than Flacco has in his career.

What a lame subject matter. Is this the best topic for an article you can pick with the Ravens at 2-0? Come on Pete ... stop being lazy and uncreative!

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't see anything wrong with watching MNF and commenting on Favre. It's a blog. Isn't that what you do in a blog?

They didn't have the cap space anyway. Moot issue.

Favre is learning a new offense. And to assist him in his learning, the Jet's elected to run the ball a grand total of 11 times last night. Not only that, for most of the second half, the Jets didn't even put a running back on the field. Giving them zero chance of catching the Charger defense off guard. They have a good pass catching RB in Leon Washington. For all the short passes they threw last night, I would think it might help to at least put him on the field.

OMG! Give it a rest. I we had Farve it would set the organization back years again. Flacco is the answer. He has pressence. I like Boller but he never had it. Flacco will have his ups and downs but no one need a selfish turd like FAVRE!!!!

It's pretty clear from watching last night's game, Brett Favre, is no Brett Favre. He looks every bit the 18 year veteran. Although he still has a strong arm his mobility is extremely limited. I'd much rather take my chances with Flacco who is eager to prove himself, and as we've learned, extremely mobile for a big QB.

I've never understood the fawning over Farve. Yes his accomplishments speak for themselves, but the last 1/3 of his career all I saw was a mediocre QB who threw too many "ducks" and INTs and got away with it becasue the media loved his "gunslinger" mentality. Meanwhile, any other QB would have been crucified. I don't begrudge him the good will he built up to get his "pass" but a fork should have been stuck in him about 5 years ago.

I think this article was more of an ego booster for Schmuck then it was an article for the people of Baltimore.

Would we be a better team with Favre? Yes. If we could go back and do it over again I would trade for Favre if we could do it. Flacco has played well but not spectacular. I still think he would have been better off on the bench for a year or two but it is what it is.

We sign Grbac, Cunningham, Harbaugh, Stewart and McNair all at the tail end of their careers. McNair comes in a goes 13-3 his first year and then gets hurt. I heard the Ravens said they didn't go after Favre because they learned from McNair. I'll never understand that one. McNair proved that any good QB when healthy can lead this team to good things. Favre may not be the best out there but he is without a doubt still a good QB and he never gets hurt. So if you want to learn something from McNair being here its that we would have been a very good team with Favre. Brett deserved better and the Ravens were fools not to sign him. Now with that being said, Flacco is the future and the future is now! Let's go Flacco!!

So far, Flacco has gotten great pass protection, something Boller never got his entire career. If that keeps up. Flacco will be fine. We'll see what happens against real defenses.

Favre is not learning a new offense. They run the same West Coast Offensive scheme in New York that they ran in Green Bay. The only thing that is different is the actual numbering/naming schemes for the same plays (Bubba Franks has been there to help that along accoring to reports out of New York). And that kind of learning curve takes no more than a couple of weeks to get straight.

Mike is right on. We don't need another aging QB. Fans forget that Farve, other than last year, threw 29 interceptions in 2005, and for the period of 05-06, threw 38 TD passes with 47 interceptions. As I recall, he ended last year by throwing up a Duck at a critical time, that got picked off to end the season for the Packers. If Boller did that the press would have been all over him. Flacco will make his mistakes as all rookie QB's do, but he will gain invaluable experience this year, something he wouldn't have gotten with Farve here. Plus, Farve has had 7 weeks to get in tune with his receivers, and he is still contending he still not in tune with them? Sounds like an excuse to me by a guy who is all about himself.

Favre certainly would have helped get the Ravens more media attention. But it would be hard to say if he could have had a positive effect on the Ravens 2008 season.

In a dream world, Favre could have served as a mentor to Troy Smith and Joe Flacco while attempting to win games as the Ravens starting QB. But like others have said, it is a moot point and even if the Ravens could have aquired Favre, he may not have been worth it at this stage in his career.

Woulda should coulda. Who cares? Dumb article.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Thanks. I was worried that it might be relevant.

To Eric who says if we beat the Steelers "convincingly" then we've done something because we've played teams who are a combined 0-6.
What is the combined record of the teams that Pittsburgh beat? Oh yeah, its 0-5.
So we can talk about the Steelers as a playoff team but not the Ravens unless we not only beat them, but beat them convincingly on their field?

Not only does your grammar suck but so does your logic Eric.

LOL at this dumb article. Way to draw ridiculously big conclusions after 3 games. Last night proved nothing except that the Chargers are really talented. Something we already knew.

Brett threw a couple of bad passes. He often does, yet still usually finds a way to win. Only one of those bad passes was intercepted and it's questionable whether that was his or the WRs fault. The other pick was PI and an incredibly athletic play by A.C.

It's a long season and those dumb enough to write off the greatest QB in NFL history really show their inability to understand the NFL and have probably only been watching for a half a dozen years.

I'm pretty high on the Ravens and Flacco too, but the reality is they've played 2 games against REALLY so-so teams. Saying this team is fine with what they have at QB this year is ignorant at best.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Agree it's too early to judge Favre, but not to early to judge the Ravens' decision not to pursue a front-line quarterback such as Favre or Daunte Culpepper. They're doing the right thing building off the draft, though you are right that it's too early to judge how that's going to go.

Josh,

Just because the style of offense is the same doesn't mean he doesn't have to learn a new offense. He has to learn the receivers and their execution of the offense, the running back and linemen in their blocking style and scheme and learning the terminology itself of plays.

McNair had an entire offseason to learn ours and he still took 5 weeks to get into the flow, Favre got there in week 2 of the preseason.

What if the Ravens got Brett Favre? What? Slow news day or something?

Let me help. Here's a few more "what if" topics we can discuss into futility.
What if George Washington had a Piper Cub airplane to fight the British? What if Barack Obama knew what he was doing? What if Brian Billick knew what HE was doing? What if Todd Heap could catch a meaningful pass in a 2008 football game? What if the networks quit ddoing those stupid sideline interviews during games? What if Suzy Kolber let Joe Namath kiss her?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I like the Suzy Kolber one. Is it okay if I steal it?

I really wish we could've had Brett here if only to prove once and for all to the dreamers that he was NOT the answer! No matter how many picks he throws, he still has his defenders. What makes any of you who still want him think he'd perform any better here? Our receivers are no better than those in NY. Favre is no mentor to any young QB, his improv style of handling the playbook is not something you want young guys under center trying to learn. It only works for him because no one ever makes him accountable for his bad throws, he's always "having fun out there" because "he's a gunslinger." I've enjoyed many of his greatest moments but I've also shook my head in wonderment time and time again as announcers excused pick after pick for years. The Ravens front office absolutely did the right thing not bringing in Favre, not that fans around here would give them credit for anything - they spend too much time gnashing their teeth and whining about Ozzie and worshiping Phil Savage (in between criticizing Ray Lewis). How's that working out for you all?

"Favre is not learning a new offense. They run the same West Coast Offensive scheme in New York that they ran in Green Bay. The only thing that is different is the actual numbering/naming schemes for the same plays (Bubba Franks has been there to help that along accoring to reports out of New York). And that kind of learning curve takes no more than a couple of weeks to get straight."

Thanks AL.....I'm glad with all of your NFL quarterback experience you know how long it takes to learn offensive schemes when you're used to doing one for 17 years...LOL

Excellent topic. Hope it does not happen but, what if Joe the Man gets his clock cleaned by "the pits"? We go back to square one. We are still on the honeymoon Pete. Ask again in week 8.

Favre is perfect for a bad team with a New York media appetite.

being a raven fan for the past 9 yrs i have seen us go throw so many veteran qb's, i think dat they made the right choice by not going with farve, cul, sims are any other proven qb that was RELEASED from there team. why not due wut most franchises due an find ur own qb out of the past 10 super b champs only 1 team has won it with a qb that was not drafted by that team and it was the Ravens. lets just keep flacco in let him learn first hand only b/c he is smarter then most rookies and dosnt act like maddox once he sees a corner r linebacker blitz

LOL. What kind of ridiculous sweeping generalizations do you have after his 6 TDs now?

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, he played great. That's one. He wouldn't have ever done that here. That's two. I still wouldn't want him waffling about retirement all next summer. That's three. Now, your point is?

Steve Davis??? *LOL* The guy who was foaming at the mouth like a 15 year old kid with pimples and duct-taped glasses, who thought it was a great idea to interview beauty pageant contestants on his "show" after they were at a Ravens practice. "So tell me" Steve gushed with baited breath, "who is your favorite Ravens player?" "Oh gosh" MissPretty replied; Kyle Boller because he's like sooooo cute!" Great interview Steve. Glad that juvenile is gone from the airwaves in this town.
