Walk hard

Since you already know that the Orioles are doing some things with a baseball that you've never seen before and hope you never see again, I thought I'd pull out the calculator and put the whole thing in perspective.

The Orioles pitching staff has walked 56 batters in the last seven games, which works out to an average of exactly eight walks per game, which -- if projected over a whole season -- would work out to 1,296 walks over the entire season.

Now, if you multiply those 1,296 walks by 90 feet, that works out to 116,640 feet, which works out to 22.09 miles on foot.

That means, if opposing batters started a walk-relay on the first day of that theoretically projected season and kept walking in the same direction until the last, they would -- according to Mapquest -- end up just five miles short of Prince Georges Stadium in Bowie, where they might just get some pitches to hit.

If the pitchers were made to travel that route they'd WALK right by the stadium.

Ok Pete, you deserve a break. I actually feel sorry for you. We have the option of turning off the TV or radio, or not turning them on in the first place. It's your job to chronicle these bizarre happenings on a daily basis. On top of which you have to read and occasionally respond to the postings on your blog, which often range from inane to absurd to ludicrous to incomprehensible. Does the Sun have a good Employee Assistance Program that offers confidential help for writers forced to witness traumatic or mind-numbing happenings on a repeated basis?

Pete's reply: I don't know, but I'm going to check.

Look at the bright side - we didn't give up 30.

No matter how hard anybody in the oriole organization tries to stay positive, this organization can't be fixed, not by Andy, not by billy beane, not even by Danny Glover with Angels in the outfield.I tried not to watch any of the game last night but when they were only losing by 1 run i decided to switch channels and watch a little. That inning where they walked all the batters is something that i use to encounter when my son was in little league many many years ago. No matter how hard you prayed for the pitcher to just throw a strike they couldn't and no matter how many times you switched players to come in from other positions they couldn't. This organization is without a doubt the laughing stock of the entire baseball league. They can keep making commercials about bird land , they can tell the fans about all the prospects we have , but nothing can be done to fix something that is beyond repair. We have 6 guys on this team with 20 or more home runs. We have 3 guy's on this team that might knock in 100 rbi's in a year.We have a remote chance to break the all time record for 3 guy's hitting 50 or more doubles in a year., and yet with all that said we won't finish with as many wins as last year.

i watched rick dempsey's comments on o's xtra last night. he said what i have been thinking for quite sometime. rick said there is a mental problem with these pitchers. to me that is putting it mildly. i feel some how dave trembley needs to come up with a real good shock treatement to get these pitchers better motivated. rick dempsy also said they are better than what we have been seeing. i agree with him. one thing a young pitcher needs to realize when he comes up to the majors is that party time and recess is over.

Hey Pete, you obviously have a lot of time on your hands. Maybe when you get done with your calculations, you can over to my place and balance my checkbook.

Pete's reply: If I remember right, you were supposed to balance MY checkbook.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
