Pete:
Whats the over and under on Markakis' chances to win a gold glove this year? If he doesn't get it, who's better?

I don't get the Dave bashing because the man doesn't have anyone to go to in the pen. Give Dave a team and then if he messes up, I'll be the 1st to say he messed up. Davey Johnson is the new savior? Take any manager on any team and they wont have a better record than the O's do under Dave.

Pete, if I can put you on the hot seat for a moment, do you feel that because the O's ate Gibby's contract, that now it has become so easy for fans to say get rid of Ramon, Walker, etc? I think the Gibby situation is so night and day from Ramon and Walker. This team can't eat contracts. I am no Ramon fan, but it's a contract year and whether he is the starter or back up, he will put up #s, as they all seem to find that stroke when the $$$$ is on the line. Ramon still has a decent bat so the O's can utilize him as a DH and as far as Walker goes, I think what you said in an earlier post is spot on, let's see what he has in Florida before cutting ties. Relievers go from great to awful each and every year so there is hope, but then again I am an O's fan so as 3PO would say to R2 "it's our lot in life to suffer"

Pete's reply: Fair question. I think it's harder to eat guaranteed money post Gibbons. Since, you have to pay Ramon next year, you try to get the most out of him. By the time he gets tired, you should have another option.

As I was watching Walker blow the lead in the 8th inning of the second game last night, I couldn't help but think about Trembley's "rules" of the game - "respect the game, be professional, be on time, give 100%, play to win, etc., etc.". I agree with all of his rules that he asks his players to abide by, but I couldn't help but question whether he violated those rules by leaving Walker in too long and allowing him to lose a game in which his players fought hard to win. Herein is my question for you Peter. Do you think he left Walker in and allowed him to lose the game as a way of providing further evidence to the front office that Walker has irreversibly lost his ability to be productive at the major league level and therefore should be released after the season. If this was not the reason, then Trembley displayed an inexcusable level of managerial incompetence and should apologize to the players. It was patently obvious that Walker was getting hammered and was not going to be able to get the final out. Your opinion please!

Pete's reply: No, I don't think he was hurting the team on purpose. I think he just doesn't have any options. Remember, Jim Miller was warming up and got hurt just before he was supposed to come in. Walker had to rush in and you saw what happened.

Birdland Todd -

I agree completely with you on the Trembley bashing. The guy has no chance. This is his first managerial job in the Show, and yeah he's made mistakes on the job. Hell, haven't we all?

Me personally, I'm sick of reading the Davey Johnson posts. Davey was a very good player, and did a really good job of managing the club in the mid to late 90's. But if he's such a great commodity, how come he's unemployed? Sooner or later the game passes all the great coaches. Doesn't matter which sport you talk about.

So let's give Dave a least a fighting chance. Let's give him the opportunity to reflect on the job he's done, and see if he adjusts his game as manager before axing him.

And for all the Einsteins that want to run Dave out of town, you do that, and you just continue the revolving door when it comes to managing this team. And if we do that, who in their right mind wants to come here?

He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
