Tonight's frustrated featured comment

Tonight's discouraged diatribe comes from Terpfan, so you probably know which direction this is headed:

Terpfan's take: Wow. Can sports around here possibly get any worse? I spent $15 per ticket to take nine people to the O's game tonight for my 7 year-old's birthday. The game was so bad that I was ready to leave before the little kids who were with us were. We left in the fourth inning. I figured, why not go home and watch the Terps, whom I set the DVR for. My night went from bad to worse, if that is possible. Watching Chris Turner was as bad as watching Cabrera. Losing by 10 to Middle Tennessee may be a low point for this program. If Ralph can't start recruiting players to compete then it's time to find someone who can. Same with Gary, although he probably gets to decide when to go since he actually won a title.

Can all sports around here possibly be this bad? Between the O's, the Ravens and the Terps (both basketball and football) it can't get much worse can it? I don't root for the DC teams, but they haven't won anything in years either. Is there a curse? This is awful.

Pete's soothing take: Whenever I play poker, there invariably comes a point in the evening when I utter a similar phrase -- "Can I really be this bad?" Of course, the answer is as obvious as it is expensive. I don't think it's fair to include the Ravens just yet, since they haven't played a regular season game, though there may be plenty of time for that later.

Pete--Tomorrow the Ravens give us all a big pick-me-up when Ray Rice runs for a touchdown, Yamon Figurs returns a punt for a TD, Matt Stover clicks for three field goals, and Ray Lewis makes a bone-jarring tackle to stop the Bengals' final drive, leading Baltimore to a 23-20 season-opening win over Cincinnati.

Pete's reply: I'm thinking 19-16, but we're on the same page. What's the football equivalent of "Pass the Kool-Aid?"

Pete, two questions:

What's your take on JJ's injury? It sounds cryptic, as he doesn't even really know what it is? Who leaves a Doctor without asking the ramifications save for Pamela Anderson (old hat for her). Seems that the comment that everyone has a tear isn't what I wanted to hear.

We know the O's aren't going to get two elite starters, but what about AJ and Moyer? Moyer it would seem, would have an impact of Mr. Olson and he is a veteran and AJ would be the legit # 2 starter that we crave. I think any dreams of C.C. should be just that, dreams. We can't afford him and why we he want to come here other than the all you can eat section?

Pete's reply: I think AJ is the only elite pitcher who's a real possibility. Moyer will be 60 next year, won't he?

Now I remember where I've seen this before. My son played in a Tee ball game and I believe there was one fewer walk than in Friday's 8th inning.

Peter- You can relay to certain fans, where as I am also frustrated, Fridge's recruiting was better this year and they have a ton of good young players that just need to learn. The 1 position that they have struggled with is of course QB. Next year they have a kid CJ Obrien who is a dual threat QB who in 2 games so far this year has thrown for 300yds+ in each and ran for some scores as well. We just have to hope that this year is not so bad as to scare off some of the local talent (i.e. Kenny Tate from Dematha stolen from Ohio State).
Their problem for the last couple years has beent they are terrible on defense. It does not matter who they play its a struggle. You never see a 60-6 game.
Terps BBall is underated this year. Sean Mosley will be a men among boys with his size and strength.

Regarding your blog about Payton saying it is hard to focus - Maybe that is just another reason to play the young players. They are trying to make an impression and focusing isn't a problem. Why play veterans who have lost interest in the games? Maybe you should relay Payton's quote to Trombley and we will see how much more time Payton gets.
Did you ask him about it?

Right on Pete. If we're gonna get Moyer, we can try to talk Jim Palmer into coming out of retirement.

He sure couldn't be any worse.

I'm definitely not happy with the past couple of sports seasons for our local teams. But let's look at the big picture this decade...Super Bowl win, NCAA Basketball championship, ACC Basketball Tourney Title, ACC Football Championship. Did I forget the O's? Anyway, we could be Cleveland or god forbid Philly, who havent won anything in decades. Things have been bad for a couple years, but we've had a pretty good decade.

Sorry to be negative, but can I be blamed? I included the Ravens because we've had one good season since the Super Bowl Championship and that ended in a disappointing loss to the dreaded Colts. I think it's hard for anyone who is being honest to be optimistic about the Ravens right now. Between injuries and the aging of our best players, it's hard to envision this coming together into something successful without a major tear down. The good news is re-loading is much easier in the NFL, but some teams, like the Arizona Cardinals, have found a way to make it look difficult.

Don't get me wrong, I'll continue to pay for O's tickets and continue to think brighter days are ahead for them and I will be there today screaming for the Purple and Black; but, you must admit, it's a tough time to be a sports fan around here.

not all D.C. sports... the Caps will be awesome! root for them!

Pete,

I hate to poo-poo your upcoming football season, but the Ravens with a rookie starting QB are basically destined for a 4-6 win season at best! Troy Aikman won ONE game his first season and that was because another local team just down the road played them!

Fridge and Gary Williams should both be on a short leash! Fridge had one great season with Duffners players and has done little since and is actually doing less coaching now. Gary won a national championship, got a great new facility and recruited more like Mount Saint Mary's than a quality Div 1 ACC team.

It's pretty bad around here but there is a NASCAR Race in Richmond today!

Pete's reply: I thought those were Ron Vanderlinden's players.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
