« The naked and the fed | Main | Melvin gets 100th RBI, limps away »

The joy of six...

...didn't last very long. The Orioles scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead over the Blue Jays, but it was short-lived. Brian Bass, who breezed through four shutout innings, came unraveled in the bottom of the fifth and the Jays battled back to even the series with an 8-7 victory.

Manager Dave Trembley said on the postgame show that Bass didn't run out of gas after four innings, but his loss of command would suggest otherwise. Bass didn't make any excuses either, but he averaged slightly more than 1 1/3 innings per appearance as a reliever with the Twins before being pushed into an emergency starter roll last week.

You would have thought that Bass following Waters would have been a pleasant, comfortable navigation.

I thought I saw both Steve Trout and Steve Laker sitting in the stands next to Rod Carew and Jay Hook.

Pete's reply: My friend, you've spent way too much time in New Jersey.

The Good Book says when the blind are leading the blind they both fall in the ditch.I think that pretty much explains why we are in last place. If I had a dollar for every time I've hollered at the TV screen for Trembley to take somebody out of a game,he's losing it,only to watch us blow a big lead this year,You and I could go to Ruth Chris's Steak House and pig out,Schmuckster. And if anybody likes to eat as much as you,it's me,lol. And we'd still have enough money to leave a big tip.Leo Mazzone must be laughing his butt off.

Have rolls on the brain, Pete? Emergency starter role, my inner English teacher tells me.

Pete's reply: That was a typo, but it definitely was freudian.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
