Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

This is seriously becoming comical.
I haven't done any research, but I figure there cannot be another team in baseball that is suffering this much.

Pete's reply: There certainly aren't any other fans in baseball who are suffering this much.

My wife I came up for our twice yearly baseball weekend from Raleigh. Wait till next year! Regardless how bad it is now, it will get better, both the weather and the Birds. It might take until the next decade to get to B E but they didn't get bad overnight and they won't get better overnight but Trembly and executive management seem to have the club headed in a positive direction. As long as they don't lose too much with free agency. In the meanwhile, we will sit in our hotel and watch to see if we can get some baseball this evening...

This latest news is beyond comical. The Orioles need to take a real hard look at their conditioning program for pitchers...NOW. Something is very, very wrong here and the futures of many talented kids are on the line. There is not another team in baseball that even comes close to the amount & duplication of these injuries. Andy better start a very serious internal investigation into this matter.

Pete,
Do you believe that the extension of Trembley was a good thing? I don't. I know this is a weak team, but the errors, and tanking again this year, just like last year under Trembley's watch, says alot. I don't see the leadership. He is not motivating this team in any fashion.

Speaking of suffering....it seems that baseball keeps statistics for everything. I've always wondered if figures are kept for players on the disabled list. Are the Orioles the most injury prone team in MLB this season? How about if we just limit that question to pitchers only? Heck...even one of last year's Orioles has been on the DL most of the season (Bedard).

Pete only the fans that aren't drinking kool aid. The kool aid drinkers are alive and kicking , talking about how satisfied they are with this year's performance.. According to them they have exceeded expectations, and the last 14 out of 16 losses don't mean anything. See they tell me that you have to lose 95 games a year forever before you can win 90 games. The orioles front office have these people so brainwashed that if they told them to go and jump off the Key bridge they would.

Are these injuries coming from Trembley overusing his mot reliable pitchers? Now Johnson will probably miss all of 2009 just like Chris Ray and the others did this year( its so many I've forgotten all of their names)

I'm sure the O's had worse pitching(or at least as bad) in the last 10 years, but I can't think of any group more inept, or is the term "not mlb ready" then this bunch. How long is our wait now?

Is there any reason to suspect that there is some pitching coach or even an entire philosophy that is at work here that seems to be crippling our pitchers, both by causing them to walk tons of batters and also tearing their labrums due to poor mechanics? There's no other team on this planet with this type of problem, there should be some sort of investigation or complete revamp of the minor leagues because something is very very wrong somewhere.

Pete,
It just doesn't matter. Obviously without bringing up our very best minor league talent for a look, why should we look at all. The O's are tired and dejected and beat up! They will need to be dragged to the finish line. This is no fault of Dave Trembly for sure but without 3 quality additions to our SP, it will be just more of the same next season. It's time for Peter the Great to get out his checkbook or get out of town!
