Orioles strike wrong chord: B Flat

payton2.jpgClearly, these are the times that try a baseball player's soul, as outfielder Jay Payton (left) pointed out after last night's 5-1 loss to the Oakland A's. The Orioles are playing out the string and they're having trouble hiding the fact that it's hard to get excited about getting your brains beat out every night.

"It's difficult to focus,'' said Payton, who ended the game by misjudging the number of outs and getting doubled off first on a fly ball. "It takes its toll. I think a lot of guys are having trouble with the mental aspect."

The physical aspect was no great shakes either. Daniel Cabrera opened the game by loading the bases with three straight walks. He needed 84 pitches to get nine outs. The A's didn't do a whole lot with the 11 runners he allowed to reach base, but they didn't need much to send the O's to their eighth straight loss.

Umm... maybe I'm a moron for asking this but where the hell did Huff go all of a sudden? I haven't read anything mentioning that he's injured, suspended or whatever, but he hasn't played the last two games. Can someone fill me in?

Pete's reply: His wife had a baby on Friday. He'll be back Monday.

Was it Tillman's right or left arm? Big difference.

Peter,
I assume you were at the game. How can Payton claim there 2 outs when the scoreboard clearly said one? You could see it on TV. Covering his @ss?

Pete's reply: I think so, and I probably would have done the same thing. It was a pretty embarrassing mistake, and it would have been worse if there was anyone in the stadium to see it.

Pete,

Why is a 35 year old outfielder stealing ab's and PT from our young players anyway, put him on the DL or cut him, Payton is over!

I was at the game and the scoreboard definitely said 2 outs when Payton was on 1st.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
