« Say it is so, Joe | Main | Late night with Dave »

No clincher tonight

The Tampa Bay Rays rallied to keep hope of a champagne celebration alive tonight, but the Boston Red Sox just defeated Cleveland, 5-4, to stay in the division title hunt for at least one more day. If the Rays hold on here, their magic number would be down to one going into tomorrow's series opener in Detroit.

That opener is an afternoon game at Comerica Field, which might actually leave too much time to party afterward.

Can anyone on this God forsaken team throw a strike? For 123 games this team was a lot of fun to watch, but jeez this last 39 games seems like its taking 2 years....it's becoming unbearable to watch....3 weeks ago we were ahead in tonight's game 6-0...please somebody have mercy and pull the plug on my life support system!

After tonight, SOMEONE needs to be fired. This is ridiculous.

Pete,

If the Rays hold on here, my god man they're playing the O's! How bad can we get? You asked the question "can this get any worse"? Dave has lost this team. Early in the year they would fight to get back in games, now we lead games and roll over without a fight! Were finally getting quality starts only to have the depleted pen blow another game. And Dave bringing in Walker last night took the cake. Walker hasn't pitched up to a Double AA standard this season and with the expanded roster we could resign Jesse Orosco to pitch better than him!

Better question, any more pitchers in the Mexican League?

Note to self: stop watching September Orioles games. I want to retain my hair in my 30s.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
