Melvin gets 100th RBI, limps away
Melvin Mora was saying just the other day how important it would be for him to finish the season with 100 RBIs after going on an amazing second-half tear, but that lingering hamstring injury threatened to keep him off the field.
Well, the hamstring injury is still lingering, but he doesn't have to worry about it anymore. He singled home his 100th and 101st runs of the year in last night's game before re-aggravating the injury and limping off the field.
He told O's beat writer Jeff Zrebiec that he would need at least a couple of days to bounce back. I'm guessing it'll take a little longer than that, since neither he nor manager Dave Trembley (both at right, enjoying a tender moment earlier in the season) figure to feel any great sense of urgency about getting him back on the field with just a handful of games left to play.

Might as well shut Mel Mo down for the duration. He's had a great year, and now that he has his 100 RBIs he really has nothing else to play for...A 5am post, Pete? You could change the title to, "The Schmuck Never Sleeps." I was having nightmares about a naked man streaking across a baseball field at that hour.

Well, so much for all that talk of another 4th place finish...
Really though, when you look at the minor leages, especially A and Double AA, it won't be long , yeah, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah it won't be long.....

What a disgrace...
Mora is actually playing hurt just for a 100 RBI season...SELFISH!
The O's should be giving a young player his atbats....I don't wanna hear that we don't have anyone to give his atbats too. A young player from either AA or AAA should be playing and getting important AB's for 2009 instead of Mora.
A last place finish, and our 11th straight losing season, but yippeee Mora knocked in 100 RBI...

As best I can tell, after Thorn and Buck ripped into the players for their attitude problems, it sure seems that not many of them feel much urgency to get back on the field.
This stuff is pure gold for the listening audience. It opens a window and verifies that things are pretty much exactly as we suspect. We've watched these guys mail it in for 11 season in a row.
If Mr. MacPhail tires of the task, can the FED take the O's into receivership and give it a try?

I have little interest in the upcoming series with the Yankees, but any word on the pitching match-ups for the opening series next season?

Dickey - who exactly is at AA or AAA that would remotely figure to be playing significant time at 3B for the Orioles in 2009? 2010 or 2011, maybe, but 2009, not a chance. Costanzo and Moore were servicable at AAA but neither showed they were ready to take over in the majors. Nobody at AA is tearing it up either. Mora will be the Orioles' starting third baseman next year unless he gets hurt or agrees to a trade.
Put yourself in Mora's position. If you were sitting on 98 rbi and had a chance to play even if not at 100% so you could achieve a career milestone wouldn't you want to try? The team is better with him in the lineup than without. He didn't hurt the team while he was playing, he just aggravated an injury that normally takes a while to fully heal. And if he hadn't tried to come back would you be complaining that he decided to just shut it down early for the season? Are you going to complain about Guthrie wanting to come back and pitch so he can get to 200 innings?

Dickey, do you really think Mora giving up AB's to a young prospect would have prevented us from finishing in last place and losing for an 11th straight year? Melvin, along with Huff, has been our best hitter in the second half. He deserves the 100 RBI's. It's a tribute to his great season. Get your head outta your @$$.

The picture with Zrebiec's column says it all about this team right now. Mora and Castro give a high five but look pissed off. Really? The team in general is mailing it in. Let's play young guys who actually want to play ball.

Congrats to Mora!

Frank and Paul...The O's should be giving atbats to any young prospect ready to compete somtime in 2009.
When you are 22 plus games out in dead last, you don't worry about an aging players milestones.Moore was hurt, so he would'nt get the promotion. Why not Costanzo who has to be protected on the 40 man, or maybe Jeff Nettles, who had a pretty good season in AA. Who know...you may find another Montanez. This is why you play young guys like Reimold, Wieters...etc...
Hey Paul...maybe you should be the one to take their head outta their a$$.
It's about time Mora played well. He was horrible the entire first half of the season. The amount of money he's getting, he should be posting those numbers all year. It's should'nt be a reward...it's his job....he make millions for playing ball. I want winning players with winning attitudes. I'm tired of losing with the same old players who seem to be more concerned about personal goals and stats, then they are about winning...We are suppose to be rebuilding...remember? You can't rebuild with a 36 yr. old thirdbaseman, a 35yr. old firstbaseman, and a 36 yr. old shortstop.

Dickey--Do you understand that achieving a personal goal of 100 rbi's helps your team? Do you understand that Melvin Mora has been one of Major League Baseball's best hitters since the All-Star break?
Melvin Mora has had a quality career as a Baltimore Oriole. You're treating him like dirt.
I wanted Melvin to get those 100 rbi's. He earned that by scrapping hard this season.
You're right "it's his job." And Melvin Mora has done his job well.
