Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

I think it is critical for MASN to televise all Nationals games in Hi Def, considering that about 16 people watch each game. What a smart move by the owners to move the Montreal franchise to Washington.

Can you find out how many MLB teams broadcast EVERY game in HD? I'm sure not all of them do. I'd like to see MASN get to that point someday.

Scooter -- I know you were being sarcastic with that "smart move" remark, but it actually was a smart move, because they've eliminated the need to announce "plenty of good seats still available" bilingually.

FYI.........
Washington, D.C. (February 6, 2008) -- The Chicago Cubs have announced that every regular season game in 2008 will be broadcast in High-Definition TV.
The Cubs will be at least the fifth team that will offer complete high-def coverage of the 2008 season. The Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will also be in high-def in every game this season.
Every Major League Baseball team will be available locally in high-def for at least some contests this year -- except for The Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals, which are broadcast locally by MASN.

FINALLY! I wonder which channel this will be on Comcast. At least this is a slow news day so it's exciting!

Pete, I guess this means that we'll get to see you in your Hawaiian shirts in HD when you're interviewed on the pregame show. My corneas are burning just thinking about it.

Pete's reply: C'mon Chris, we all know that's what you live for.

Hopefully Verizon Fios will deign to carry MASN HD now....
You'd think they would with all the advertising they do on the O's games with set graphics & all...

Good move by MASN. Now can they find a better play-by-play announcer for the Orioles. Gary Thorne is horrible. Buck Martinez isn't much better. The Orioles need someone that knows something about the history of the team. Palmer is ok but he wants to talk to much. Jim Hunter and Rick Dempsey make a decent team.

Hunter and Dempsey are the O's worst, but they're all better than the Nationals crews. It's like listening to old weather guys from the '50s.

"Jim Hunter and Rick Dempsey make a decent team."
You're soooo wrong. And I like the guys you don't, especially Palmer. But I would agree the Orioles have fired an all-star cast of broadcasters over the years. Many times I would hear that so and so was let go and would say "WHY?" And of course letting Miller go from the radio side was the broadcasting version of letting Babe Ruth go to the Yanks for chicken feed.

After watching Chris Waters pitch a beautiful, 2-0 shutout, I hear the voice of Baltimore's own John Waters celebrate by shouting "The egg man! The egg man!"

Good luck getting comcast to carry it.We went the entire year of 2007 with no os games before comcast deemed it appropriate to carry them this year in Charlottesville.

This seems like a half step to me. With only one HD channel, MASN only will be able to televise half the O's games in HD. That's better than what they do now, but I have a hard time watching anything that's not in HD anymore.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I agree, but progress is progress.

Since I'm poor, the HD thing is irrelevant to me. As an Orioles fan though, it really did infuriate me that the only games MASN decreed as being HD-worthy were the Yankees and BoSox.
I'm a fan of Buck Martinez. I like his knowledge of the game.

All the O's announcers stink, Gary Thorne wants to anticipate too much, Jim Palmer wants you to think he knows everything (to include hitting) Buck has a voice for an animated childrens movie and Dempsey and Hunter have to be the worst of the bunch. If anything Fred Manfra and Joe should be the A team! But none of these guys will ever touch Chuck Thompson , Bill O'Donell and Brooks Robinson!
