Sure enough, it's Flacco!

harrington.jpgYou don't need to trust me on this anymore. Ravens coach John Harbaugh has announced that Joe Flacco will be the starting quarterback for Sunday's regular season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals...not that he had much choice in the matter.

Troy Smith showed up for camp today, but has lost so much weight from his nasty bout with tonsilitis, he'll need more time to build up his strength. The jury remains out on Kyle Boller. The team will make a decision Friday whether to place him on injured reserve.

The Ravens spent part of the day auditioning quarterbacks and ESPN is reporting that Falcons castoff Joey Harrington (at left, getting sacked Thursday night at M&T Bank Stadium) has agreed to terms in the past hour. Chris Simms flew in from Tampa after being released by the Bucs and former Vikings backup Todd Bouman also was under consideration.

Wow, thats bad news....starting a rookie QB (again) and signing Joey Harrington. Seriously....Joey ??? Not good.

Troy, get back soon...

I've always trusted you, Peter, but now i can verify. Any info on why they chose Joey Heisman over Simms ?

Wish that they would have picked up a couple of these CB's that have been released. Ravens CB's are a scary proposition.

Pete's reply: I can't really answer that. I wasn't at Owings Mills today. I'll have to check that with Jamison Hensley.

Joey Harrington?? Newsome is getting to be an embarassment. he has to go!

I'm convinced that Jay Payton would swing at the first pitch if the ball were rolled uo to the plate by the pitcher.

I say they signed Harrington because he has played recently.

You are an embarrassment, DAVE

Perhaps the Ravens should look to the Orioles for a QB.

If Guthrie can throw the ball downfield? Maybe he's the man for the job--he certainly has the second best arm on the Orioles.

Hey, wait. Maybe Nick Markakis could QB the Ravens. He definitely has the best arm in Baltimore.

Am I the only person that thinks Dante Culpepper would be better than anything the Ravens have now at QB. I am a supporter of Ozzie but come on Joey Harrington. Really Joey Harrington. He could beat out Shockley for the number three spot in ATL. Even Chris Simms would be better as a starter than Flacco now or any of the others.

Pete's reply: I disagree. I think Flacco's going to surprise you.

Wow, just when I was getting ready for Vinnie Redux.

Pete's reply: It appears ESPN whiffed on Harrington. Now ESPN is reporting Bouman has signed with the Ravens.

Pete , I am relieved that ESPN goofed on Harrington signing , I rather have Todd Bouman as your later blog reported .
I hope Flacco doesnt get mugged !

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
