Where Cintron goes, trouble follows

There's an old saying in baseball and it goes something like this:

You can't hide a guy at shortstop.

Well, to be fair, I don't know if it's an old saying. I just know that it's a saying and it's true and I would take credit for it if I could get away with it.

Dave Trembley has lived it during the past few weeks. Alex Cintron was brought here because he figured to add some offensive punch at the shortstop position. Instead, he has too often been at the center of some costly defensive snafu.

Tonight, he came on to pinch hit for Juan Castro in the eighth and made a pair of poor throws in the ninth as the Red Sox answered a late Orioles rally with two runs off Jim Johnson and Randor Bierd.

Why do we even have Cintron anymore? We have the defensive guru of Castro. Granted, his bat isn't on fire like Mora's bat is, but he's making them plays.

From rightfield, the throw on the potential double play looked to be a tough one with the runner barreling in on him. Millar should have caught it.

If Sarfate and Olson are going to be removed from the rotation because they are hurting the team, Cintron needs to be DFA'ed because he is not helping this team. He's not helping offensively and he is hurting the team with his defense. Everyone knew Cintron was not the answer long term, so let Castro be the full time SS for the rest of '08.

Cintron appears to be compensating for something when he throws. He never gets full extension. I don't know if it's a permanent result of his past injuries, but I don't see him being part of the organization next year. I have to admit to being disappointed because I thought he could help with his offense, but the defense is just so much shakier when Castro is not in the field.

Was this entry title a reference to the 1968 movie, Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows? My fiancee just made me watch this movie a few weeks ago... I can't lie, it was pretty brutal.

Pete's reply: Nice catch. No, it was not a great movie, but my mom made me go see it when I was a kid.

Hey Jack,

I think the technical term for Cintron's condition is that he throws like a girl.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
