Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

So you know what I am going to say. What's a guy got to do go 5 for 5 to get a second consecutive start? Hit for the cycle? Sweet Lou is not getting his due.

Wow, Trembley seems determined not to give Montanez two starts in a row.
"Honor Thy Veterans" has been his 11th Commandment since he got here; no reason he should change now. But looking at that lineup, nobody would guess that this is supposed to be a rebuilding team.

Thank Jobu Castro is back. I couldn't have watched another game with Cintron playing shortstop... or anywhere else on the field. It's like putting Daniel Cabrera out there as a position player. The guy couldn't catch the clap at a bordello!

Isn't a rebuilding team suppose to play the young guys? ie. Montanez
Posted by: Jason | August 11, 2008 4:53 PM
I get that you have to get Payton some playing time, but like others have said, Montanez deserves to play. Payton is probably better defensively, but I'd like to see more of Montanez to know for sure. Hopefully some of the press will ask Trembley and/or MacPhail about this every time Montanez is not in the starting line up.

GET MONTANEZ IN THERE....If Trembley is no committed to rebuilding perhaps we should look elsewhere.
Same old same old mistakes by the blO's...boring

I am going to give Trembley the benefit of the doubt on the Montanez issue. My guess is that he is trying to showcase Payton for a possible trade.
Posted by: Ryan | August 11, 2008 5:38 PM
Payton doesn't need to be showcased at all, so we all need to get rid of that theory. Every team in baseball who might want Payton can look at his 10 or so years of mediocre stats and have plenty of info.
Trembley just truly believes that Montanez can't play CF.

I'm as big of a Trembley fan as anyone. I hope Ryan is right about showcasing Payton (who has done a fine job of late). I have no problem trading Payton within our division again to Tampa Bay since Carl Crawford is on the DL (Longoria too).
Dave Trem, if you still "hear everything, see everything" please play LOU. We want to see the kids play. Put a J Walker deal together while you're at it A Mac.

well its 2 zip no outs trembly will wait till sarfate gives up 6 runs before he takes him out trembly your an idiot you lost last nights game and tonite is no different.

Pete's reply: You really wanted to go the bullpen with nobody out in the first inning? That's how turn one loss into a five-game losing streak.
Posted by: iron rider | August 11, 2008 7:23 PM
I can't figure out how Trembley thinks. It's like he gets something in his mind and he won't let go. I guess from his Cub days he decided that Lou wasn't going to make it so he's determined to prove himself right.
Why did the O's keep Cintron and sent back Fahey? I thought they were trying to develop their young players.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't think Fahey factors heavily in the youth movement.

another great play by cintron he is frigging awful
Posted by: iron rider | August 11, 2008 7:30 PM
If your plans are to showcase Payton, Millar, etc, them why call up Montanez for a spot starting role. You take an everyday player and minor league triple crown contender (.325avg 26hr 97rbi) to have him sit? He goes 5-8 in his starts and 5-10 overall for a last place team and doesn't warrant back to back starts? I have lost all confidence in Trembley. This makes no baseball sense or common sense.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Trembley's not going to put the kid in CF and embarrass him for your enjoyment. The guy's still getting up to speed in LF.

Congrats, Mr. McFailure. You were brought in to pull this team together. Your hires were genius like-NOT-Mr. Angelos deserves better than this--now instead of 4th place, the BIrds are the cellar dwellers, and going deeper.
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: You were thinking, what, playoffs in his first full season as GM. It takes a little longer than that.
Posted by: kiki birdie | August 11, 2008 8:00 PM
Ryan,
Jay Payton has played in about 1200 MLB games. He is not exactly an unknown quantity, and three or four more games isn't going to make a difference.
Posted by: PhilF | August 11, 2008 8:03 PM
Jay Payton is probably the worst player in the major leagues. He never takes a pitch, so he has an abysmal OBP. He doesn't hit for power, so he has a lousy SLG. So what exactly is he good at?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Making great catches to bail out young pitchers.
Posted by: Bryan | August 11, 2008 8:32 PM
But Pete, forget CF...Montanez should be in LF, Scott as DH , Huff at 1st. Millar will be 37 next month and is batting .246 on a last place team.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't know. I think you might be getting greedy. The guy is having a great year, but he's a late-developing minor league guy who was tearing up Double-A. It's not as simple as just writing him in the lineup every day. He's got a history of failing after promotions, so Trembley is trying to bring him along in a way that maximizes his chance of being successful. Give it a couple of weeks and see where things are.

Peter, This is a year when developing and evaluating talent should be foremost on the agenda. They aren't going anywhere this season, and if a flyball or two drops in, it's not going to cost them the wildcard. When (if) they ever contend, they won't be able to afford this. Right now, they should be taking chances. If it gets a little ugly, so be it. It's more than justified by the chance of developing a major player player from the system instead of through trade of FA.
The O's are like a guy trying to put out a fire in his kitchen while making sure that he keeps his hair combed and his shoes shined. You can't really do both. If the O's want to contend down the road, they have to get the maximum out of the talent they have... not for now, but for 2010 and beyond.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm pretty sure that's what they're trying to do. As I said in the previous response, it's not as simple as just writing a guy's name in the lineup every day.
