Today's smart-aleck featured comment comes from Ray:

Ray's take: Let (Brad) Bergesen pitch five or six innings tonight so he'll be ready for Friday. Heck, it's only the Yankees.

My take: Good point.

Bergersen won't be pitching for the O's Friday, bank on it. Olson needs to continue to learn here. He's 24 and has won 8 games in his rookie season, six more than Clay Buchholz has won this year and eight more than Hughes and Kennedy have won for the Yankees this year combined. How readily people around here give up on young players is truly astonishing.

Yankees? Shoot yes, BRING 'EM!

Orioles Magic Number: 22 [Number of wins in the remaining games for a winning season]

Pete,

The Orioles are in last place and they may not finish above .500. We've all been in this place too often in the past. My question is, has it ever been this much fun? One reason: Trembley answers questions logically, gives out a lot of information and let's us in on the development process as it occurs.
He may not always say things as grammatically as we would like, but I love the guy for facing the cameras and reporters every day and never losing his cool. Do you agree?

Pete's reply: Yes I do.

Yeah, it's only the Yankees... only if Giambi shaves his 'stache and A-Rod gets hurt.

Other than that, Bergesen has a tough task but hey, he's won 15 games and has a 3.00 ERA. It should be a walk in the park.

This promotion with the 50 millionth fan is great, but what happens on Tuesday if a Red Sox fan (which usually consist of more than 50% of attendance at sox games in bmore) is the 50 millionth fan? They wouldn't really give the tickets to a red sox fan would they?

Pete's reply: Gosh, I certainly hope not.

So I guess the Melvin haters are now going to gripe that they were only 2 run homers today. Oh and he was still one hit away from hitting for the cycle twice this week. Geez, what a bum!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
