Today's featured comment
Today's featured comment comes from Scooter, who wasn't satisfied with my list of the oddities of yesterday's unsuspended game:
Scooter's take: Here's another weird but true fact about the game. From the "Too much time on my hands" department: The game started on the 119th calendar day of the year and ended on the 238th calendar day of the year...119 days after it started.
Pete's take: That really is quite a weird coincidence...and I back-checked Scooter to verify the information, saving thousands the trouble of clicking on their Calculator function and trying to remember how many days are in each month. Important hint: This is a leap year, or -- if you want to be snooty about it -- an intercalary year.
Confidential to Scooter: When you get done with whatever strange calculation you're working on now, could you come over and balance my checkbook?

Schmucker:
Since we have nothing else to discuss here, let me pose a question about the O's minor league pitchers. Why is it that Bradley Bergesen always seems to be the pitcher that everyone wants to see the Orioles bring up to the big club in September? If you look at the Bowie pitching staff, he might have the most wins, but he doesn't necessairly have the best stats. Jason Berken has almost identical stats to Bergesen, and has 50 more strikeouts which might indicate he has more or better stuff (now there is a great word!), but you never hear his name mentioned. David Hernandez has a better ERA by a wide margin than either of them, and has 90 more strikeouts than Bergesen, again indicating that he has the more dominate stuff. Then there is the highly touted Chris Tillman who also has thrown well. Can you give the fans some insight into why the O's front office (or is it just the fans?) seems to favor Bergesen?

Pete's reply: I don't know that the front office does favor BB, or else he would have been called up for one of these past three open slots in the rotation.

Pete:
With all your contacts all over the baseball world, you must have a scout or someone in the front office that can give you some feedback on the four pitchers in question.
