Our featured comment of the day comes from Deke, who is regular in these parts and usually has something cogent to add to the debate -- in this case, the ongoing conversation about what to do with this O's pitching staff:

Deke's take: They should get rid of Walker and sign one of the kids that pitched at Williamsburg. Anything would be better. I feel sorry for Trembley, his relief staff has fallen apart, in part due to injuries and political and business decisions on the part of the front office, and he has one solid starter. Now the bats are cooling off, so how can you expect him to win?

Pete's take: I'm going to give Deke the typographical benefit of the doubt (as so many of you have given me) and assume he meant Williamsport, which is the site of the Little League World Series. I don't think they played baseball back in Williamsburg, though one-time resident Patrick Henry did speak of the "clash of resounding arms" in his famous "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech in 1775.

Peter- When are we gonna see some of the future? I mean legitimate prospects like Reimold, Bergeson, and D. Hernandez. I mean, we were told that was what this season was about. Two of those guys have been in the minors for 5 years and one 4.
I am getting frustrated that we will just see Redmans and Fiorentinos and Fahey's and Mitchells and Burres's.

I hear dump D Cab and I will admit 100% that I was in the camp that the light would go on, but unfortunately it's the check engine light because he will not be a star ever. I think he will have one of those crazy years when he goes 18-9, but it wont be here, as who else can we bring in to help this kid? Palmer, Kranny, Miller, Leo and our own Peter Schmuck, showed Daniel how to repeat his delivery, but these guys didn't fail, Daniel failed.

I think Daniel seems like a nice kid, as not everyone is media friendly, but injury or no injury, he is not improving and if he can't eat innings than he is in the same league as Olson and Liz.

The BP is in shambles, as anyone not named Dennis, Jim or Lance, scares me to death. F Cab, Alberto, Walker, Kam and Rocky aren't getting it down. Rocky and Kam are different in that one is coming back from an injury and the other is brand spanking new, but I do see the positives in that even Joe Torre, couldn't do what Dave has done. How do you motivate guys when you have only 1 reliable starter? They know they need to score runs in bunches and for the most part, they've done it, but this weekend shows that if they aren't scoring 10, 11, 12 runs, the lead isn't safe.

This same team next year with 2 reliable starters would be in the hunt for the Wild Card. I honestly believe that if a guy like AJ and someone in the mode of Meche or Lilly was on this staff, we would be challenging for the Wild Card. Forget Tex and get some pitching. I don't want to keep wasting fine seasons by Nick and Brian who are busting their butts, to have zip to show for it. Yanks and Sox are aging, but we can't do anything without 2 SPs to team with Jeremy.

Smucker:
Touche, I knew that didn't sound right when I wrote it, but didn't bother to check it out. You got me.

Pete,

After looking at the new print of the Sun, is it safe to assume the the tabloid style sports page is done? I can only hope!!!!!

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Indeed, the tabloid is no more, though I thought it was fun while it lasted.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
